WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University begins a three-game series on Friday night in a trip to No. 12 ranked Oklahoma City University.

On Saturday the teams will meet in a 1:00pm doubleheader. Both games are seven inning affairs.

It is the final road trip of the regular season for the Purple Pride. The team looks to secure a berth in the Sooner Athletic Conference tournament.

The Lions have three 3-game series yet to be played; all against teams that have been ranked this year: No. 12 Oklahoma City, No. 1 ranked Oklahoma Baptist University and Northwood University. The latter two foes come to Waxahachie.

SAGU (18-21 / 8-10 in SAC), sixth in the SAC, will need a strong defensive effort, coupled with excellent pitching to avoid being swept.

Key Players to Watch

The Stars have two batters who rank in the SAC’s Top 20; Connor Lynch at .410 and Forrest Smith .371. SAGU has one, Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS ) at .437.

Smith is tops in the longball with 15 homers. Lynch is fourth with seven. The Lions have three, total, smacked by Denton, Dej Mathis (Wister, Ok / Wister HS, Bacone College ) and Raul Castro (Durango, Mex / Berkner HS, Hillsdale College ).

Neither team steals a large number of bases, though OCU's Josh Halbert is sixth in the SAC with 11. Jonathan Santiago (Arlington, Tx / Bowie HS ) is the Lions number one threat with 10 (11th).

OKC’s leaders in pitching victories includes the following; RHP Chris Pike (6-3, 2.14 ERA), LHP Michael Nolan (4-2, 4.28), LHP Cale Russell (4-2, 7.41 ERA) and RHP Shane Henderson (4-1, 3.41).

Pike has struck out 85 batters in 55 innings. Nolan has rung-up 55 in 48 frames.

Their closer, 6’9 LHP Brad Wieck (2-3, 5 saves, 3.51), has fanned 68 batters in 41 innings.

SAGU’s top pitchers, in regards to wins; Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS ), Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS ), Pedro “Tres” Ortiz (Lorena, Tx / Lorena HS ) and Jeremy Cross (Americus, Ga / Harker Heights HS, Univ. of Dallas ).

RHP Pisors is 5-3 (3.08 ERA), RHP Killebrew is 3-1 (4.65 ERA), LHP Ortiz is 3-6 (4.75 ERA) and LHP Cross is 3-3 (8.08 ERA).

The Pride’s top reliever is 6'2 sophomore RHP Castro (1-0, 3 saves, 3.68 ERA)

OKCU, a perpetual national power, is coached by Denney Crabaugh. He is in his 25th season at the helm and is currently 1,209-378-2.

Sam Blackmon is in his inaugural campaign in Waxahachie. He previously coached at the University of Dallas and East Texas Baptist University, both NCAA D3 programs.
