SAGU professor Bartel earns Distinguished Educator Award
Waxahachie, Texas — October 23, 2013 — Southwestern Assemblies of God University's (SAGU) Dean of the College of Bible and Church Ministries Dr. LeRoy Bartel won the Distinguished Educator Award at the 2013 Assemblies of God General Council on August 9.
Vice President of Student Services Terry Phipps shared, "Dr. Bartel was chosen because of his many years of exemplary service to Christian Education as a professor, administrator and denominational officer. Dr. Bartel is highly regarded, by students, whom he has taught to study the Word of God and implement those studies into their daily lives."
The distinguished awardees are voted on by members of their respective college board, and each awardee came forward to share a few highlights of working in higher education and thank their colleagues. Dr. Bartel was among the four educators to win the award. Other winners included Dr. Joan Cargnel of Evangel University, Dr. James Hernando of the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, and Dr. Daniel Nelson of North Central University.
Dr. Bartel shared, "My greatest joy and sense of fulfillment comes from former students who are effective and excelling in ministry. I have former students who are national executive team members, executive presbyters, and district superintendents."
"Some of them pastor some of the largest and most effective churches, are excelling as key staff members in those churches, and are carrying out missionary activities with distinction around the world. I am a blessed man!"
Dr. Bartel has also served as the General Council's National Director for the Division of Christian Education and the denomination's first commissioner on discipleship. Bartel came to SAGU in 1984 as the coordinator of Christian education and pastoral ministries before becoming the chair of the Division of Church Ministries (1993-1996) and Dean of Students (1990-1992).
Twenty-three other faculty and administrators who have served for two decades or more in their positions were also honored, four of which were from SAGU. Vice President of Academics Dr. Paul Brooks was honored for 20 years as an administrator, professors Dr. Robert Mapes and Dr. Loyd Uglow for 25 years as educators and Dr. Adonna Otwell for 35 years.
