Psychology alumni work together at mental health agencyWaxahachie, Texas — April 8, 2014 — Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) alumni Mario R. Vega brings together other SAGU alumni to find career opportunities at Metrocare Services in Dallas, Texas.

Mario Vega is a Licensed Professional Counselor and has been a Behavior Intervention Specialist at Metrocare services since July 2012. Metrocare Services is a non-profit mental health agency in Dallas that services Dallas county and neighboring suburbs.

"Metrocare works with individuals who have mental handicaps from the age of 3 and up," Vega said. "We serve these individuals in their homes, schools, daycare, or wherever else they're located."

Metrocare personnel work with individuals and help modify a wide variety of mental areas their patients have, including communication and aggression discrepancies. These personnel educate the parents and family members of the patients about their disabilities and guide them through the different phases of treatment in the developmental process.

Vega wanted more SAGU alumni to know about the career opportunities he had experienced, so shortly after he started at Metrocare, he began connecting with SAGU counseling students.

"Metrocare Services is a great company to work for," Vega said. "Every day we help individuals who struggle with mental illnesses, developmental disabilities, and severe emotional problems, and work hard to help them improve their quality of life. It's an awesome opportunity to serve those in need, so I was more than happy when I was able to convince my friends and
SAGU alumni to join my department as counselors."

SAGU alumni joined Vega at Metrocare including Ashish Mathew in Fall 2012, Debbie Mikesell in Fall 2013, and Elizabeth Munoz, the latest addition, in February 2014. The hours that the alumni put in for Metrocare count toward their state licensing program, and Metrocare pays for any additional education.

Elizabeth Munoz graduated from SAGU with a Bachelor of Science in Counseling and a minor in psychology in December 2013. She believes that her education at SAGU has prepared her for the social work she performs with Metrocare.

"I feel that my professors helped me to grasp the 'big picture' of mental health. One of the many things they taught us was to consider not only our patient's minds, but also the environment and family life in which they grew up," Munoz said. "The small-classroom setting also allowed for a lot of in-class critical thinking and conversation, which stretched us to see outside the textbook. Overall, I felt very prepared."

Four other SAGU alumni work at Metrocare as service coordinators: Nicolas Tangco, Marlene Delgabo, Yesenia Gracano, and Priscilla Delgadillo.
