Freshmen place as Lady Lions battle for 9th place

Next Up: NCCAA Nationals in Ohio, Nov. 16

cc-herringtonSHAWNEE, Oklahoma  --  Facing stiff competition at the Sooner Athletic Conference Women’s Cross Country Championship near Oklahoma City, the first-year Southwestern Assemblies of God University finished ninth, narrowly missing out on placing higher.

Tenth-ranked Oklahoma Baptist University took first place, beating both No. 19 Texas Wesleyan University and No. 16 Oklahoma City University, who tied for second. Wayland Baptist University (Tex), ranked No. 28, wasn’t far behind in fourth.

John Brown University (Ark) was next, followed by St. Gregory’s University (Ok) and Northwood University (Tex). The University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma (USAO) just edged SAGU by nine points.

(Final Team Point Standings are posted below, along with NAIA team rankings)

OBU’s Hannah Helker won top honors by winning the five kilometers race with a time of 16:44. A minute later was Sarah Jerotich (17:44) of Wayland Baptist.

SAGU sent their five harriers to the event. It took place on the grounds of the Gordon Cooper Technology Center.

The Lady Lions’ top finisher was Kristen Herrington (Lufkin, Tx / Hudson HS). At 5’3, she turned in a time of 22:13. At 50th, the freshman drew 40 individual points.

Herrington has finished first among SAGU runners in all four of their meets this fall.

Destiny Garza (Aldine, Tx / MacArthur HS) was next (22:34), twenty-one seconds later. Also a freshman, the 5’1 Garza has ended each meet second to Herrington.

The SAGU trio of Emily Ball (Macdoel, Cal / Butte Valley HS), Julie Alvarez (Carrollton, Tx / Creekview HS) and Chayimel Rolan (Artesia, NMex / Artesia HS) concluded the 3.1 mile course within a minute of one another.

Ball (26:55), Alvarez (27:39) and Rolan (27:40) cross the tape before the rest of the field had ended. Concluding third on the team was the best this season for Ball, a junior.
