SAGU cross country places at NCCAA National Championships
Head Coach Jason Covarrubias is thrilled for this second year program, “We improved as a program today! The future is bright for the SAGUXC program.”
SAGU’s sophomore Destiny Garza finished 30th in the nation with a time of 19:42.3. Garza ran at a 6:21 pace per mile. Despite battling an injury, freshman Kelly Cook finished at 21:34.2, coming in 88th out of 117 athletes.
“Destiny finished in the top 30 in the nation! She is only a sophomore and now has some skins on the wall for next season. I’m looking forward to seeing more from Destiny,” says Covarrubias, “Kelly fought injury and an illness this week but she ran her heart out.”
The men’s team qualified to run at the national meet. The team finished 15th out of 19 teams. Sophomore Jose Gutierrez led the men’s team, coming in 44th place at 26:52.7. Gutierrez kept a 5:25 pace per mile. Freshman Gabriel Price finished 54th at 27:04.8. Freshman Gerardo Nava finished at 28:00.1 in 84th. Sophomore Brad Beimler came in 86th at 28:11.4, sophomore Jose Campos finished at 29:52.8, and freshman Eric Jones came in at 31:48.0.
“The men, Finished better than what it said we would on paper. 15th place as a team is great. I guess that would be why you run the race,” says Covarrubias.
