Home soccer scrimmages on Tuesday
SAGU hosts Hill College at 1pm, 3pm
Lions teams take the field seeking teamwork, offense
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Both the men’s and women’s soccer teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University will be in action on Tuesday in a home scrimmage against Hill College.
The Lady Lions will take on the Lady Rebels at 1:00pm at SAGU’s on-campus pitch. At approximately 3:00pm the men’s teams will face-off.
It will be the only chance for SAGU fans to get a glimpse of the Purple Pride until next month. The Lady Lions open the 2013 season with two road games while the Lions are out of town in four straight matches.
Admission is free to the public. Seating is limited, so portable chairs are advised.
The forecast is calling for a partly sunny sky with temperatures at 95 at 1pm and increasing to 97 by 3pm. Southeasterly winds of 8 mph with mild humidity (25%) is expected. Sunglasses, visors and umbrellas are advised.
Hill College, located in Hillsboro, Texas (north of Waco), will present a solid challenge for SAGU. A year ago they posted a pair of wins in exhibition games.
The Lady Rebels enjoyed an outstanding season in 2012, going 12-3-1.
Lady Lions Update
Head Coach Mandy Fortner says “Our focus for Tuesday’s scrimmage is to allow players to get used to playing together in a competitive atmosphere.”
“The plan is to maintain possession while creating opportunities to attack through our midfield and wing players,” she added. “We look to have some strong, attacking-minded players. We look to create more scoring opportunities.”
“We have several newcomers who have stood out in training camp. Kaylie Cox (Midlothian, Tx / Midlothian HS), our Center Back, will provide strong support behind midfielders Natalie Pena (Dallas, Tx / Union HS), Justine Lopez (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) and freshman Maddie Thornley (Flower Mound, Tx / Marcus HS).”
Fortner will get a chance to see two freshman goalkeepers, including Kathleen Espinosa (Corpus Christi, Tx / King HS) and Angelina Bickley (Utah).
The Lady Lions, 6-11-1 in 2012, are carrying 26 players, 13 incumbents and 13 recruits.
As for naming captains this year, Coach Fortner explains that practices and performance will determine game captains each week. “I want to keep our competitive edge among our upperclassmen.”
SAGU will wear all white uniforms at home and will don new road threads. They will feature purple numbers with SAGU blazing across the top of grey, Brazil-styled jerseys. The new Lions logo adorns the sleeve.
Lions Announce Co-Captains
The Lions finished last fall in a skid that knocked them out of contention for post-season play. Head Coach Clem Oancea (WAHN-cha) has infused the squad with a new look that is bent on speed.
They are rebuilding an attack that sputtered down the stretch. Replacing Danny Martinez (Houston, Tx / Cypress Creek HS), the club's scoring leader in recent campaigns, leaves a clear void. He delivered 15 goals as a junior and nine as a senior.
A 20-man club has youth and a skilled midfield that must come together as a unit in the near future. Ball control has been an obvious strength in the past two years. It is expected again to be the key to both the offense and defense.
"We are very happy to get things going," Assistant Coach Alex Vazquez chimed on Monday. "The season is starting and we feel confident that we are going to have a good year."
"It's a very important challenge (the scrimmage with Hill College) for us to start the season of right. We have to find the right pieces that will help us have a good year. Games like these are important to get us prepared."
The Hill College Rebels were 9-6-1 last autumn under Head Coach Paul Davenport. They won the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference.
SAGU begins the 2013 season on Friday in Houston when they go up against the University of St. Thomas at 7:00pm.
Coach Oancea has announced that a pair of veterans, midfielder Jonathan “Colocho” Ramos (Tegucigalpa, Honduras / Garringer HS) and goalie Cesar Galvan (Dallas, Tx / Lovejoy HS) will lead the Lions as Co-Captains.
SAGU will introduce new home uniforms this season. Gone are the white jerseys with purple pinstripes. ‘In’ is an all-white combination with a bold, vertical white stripe on the left side.
