Thursday Sports Summary
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- A day that began with grey skies, heavy rains and lightning finished with rolling thunder.
The Southwestern Assemblies of God University basketball teams had their hands full against Our Lady of the Lake University during a doubleheader in the Sheaffer Center.
Leading briefly in the early stages of the game, the Lady Lions eventually yielded to the first place Lady Saints, 80-54. The rebuilding effort by a young SAGU team revealed new strengths that are giving much promise to next season.
The loss dropped SAGU's overall record to 9-19 while their mark in the Red River Athletic Conference slipped to 5-15. They have two games remaining and must win one to qualify for a spot in next week's league tournament.
Wiley College (24-3, 18-2 in RRAC) visits town on Saturday at 2:00pm in the final regular season home game.
No. 21 ranked OLLU is now 27-2 in all games and 20-2 in the RRAC.
A detailed report on the game will be posted, including the official box score and action photos.
Played before a near-packed crowd, the men's game followed.
The no. 7 ranked Lions and no. 33 Saints, who have had several epic thrillers in the short history of their series, added another on Thursday.
The contest was tied seven times and the lead changed hands ten times before the Lions went ahead to stay, 56-54, with fifteen minutes remaining. They extended the lead to fourteen at 76-62 and went on to score a 95-88 triumph over the two-time defending Red River champions.
SAGU also extended their winning streak to 16 games and reduced their magic number to one in their bid to win their first RRAC title. At 25-3 overall and 18-2 in league play, the team needs either a win in their final two regular season games or a loss by no. 19 ranked LSU-Shreveport (21-5, 16-4 in RRAC).
The Lions almost clinched the championship on Thursday. LSUS needed overtime to edge Jarvis Christian College on the road, 100-99.
SAGU returns to the court for a duel with Wiley College (15-13, 9-11 in RRAC) in a 4:00pm (CST) matinee on Saturday, February 23. The last home game of the regular season will tribute two players on "Senior Day."
A complete review of the game, packed with stats and photos, will be posted on Friday.
The men's and women's teams will wrap-up the season on Monday. They will travel 207 miles for a clash with LSU-Shreveport.
Conference Tournament coming to SAGU
The RRAC Conference tourney is set for March 1, 2 and 4. SAGU will host the event, which will bring the top 16 teams from the league to the Sheaffer Center in a single-elimination venue.
Cross Country and New Logo Announced
During an inspirational halftime ceremony, it was announced that SAGU is adding a new sport, cross country, to its existing menu when the 2013-14 season begins in the fall.
SAGU athletic teams, who will join the Sooner Athletic Conference in August, will be adorned with a new logo, which was unveiled in a festive ceremony at a center court.
