No. 8 Lions host Paul Quinn College at 4pm Saturday
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The college basketball season may be winding down for many, but for the men’s team at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, it’s winding UP!
The Lions are currently ranked #8 in the nation in the most recent Top 25 Coaches Poll in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). They are 23-3 overall and will tote a 14-game winning streak into their next game.
SAGU, with only three home dates remaining, will play host to Paul Quinn College on Saturday, February 16, inside the Sheaffer Center.
The Tigers are fresh from a record-setting 161-138 win on the road (Hobbs, NM) over the University of the Southwest. At 11-14, they have won two-in-a-row, both times eclipsing the 100-point barrier.
The game is set for a 4:00pm (CST) opening tip and will be broadcast in HD by SAGU Sports Live. The pre-game show will begin at approximately 3:45pm.
SAGU won their first meeting, 67-55, in early January. The Lions were 14-3 at the time, PQC was 7-6.
The Tigers have surpassed the century mark on nine occasions and average 91.8 points per game. They have five players scoring in double figures, including two who did not play in their first clash of the Big Cats.
The Lions counter with a defense that permits just 67.5 ppg.
Head Coach Donnie Bostwick, 50-14 since taking the reins of the Purple Pride last season, will probably go with the same line-up the team has used during their win streak:
Junior guards Caleb Gentry (Hondo, Tx / OK Wesleyan Univ, Hondo HS) and Dominique Rambo (Dallas, Tx / OK Wesleyan Univ, Trinity Christian School), sophomore wing Jon Walter (Garland, Tx / Garland HS), senior Nathaniel Duce Ward (Waco, Tx / Univ of N. Texas, Connally HS) and sophomore Mike Nwelue (Lewisville, Tx / Lewisville HS) – the latter two at forward.
The Lady Lions (8-18) are off until Monday, Feb. 18, when they entertain Northwood University (4-20) at 7:00pm. The game will also be aired on SAGU Sports Live, starting with a pre-game show at 6:45pm.
In softball action, Southwestern has taken to the road for four games in Moore, Oklahoma against Hillsdale College. It will be the season opener for the Lady Saints.
SAGU (0-3) will play the Halos in a pair of doubleheaders. Today’s twinbill starts at 1:00pm, with Saturday’s slated for a noon first pitch.
Head Coach Tim Grant hasn’t made public the pitching rotation, though his three hurlers should all figure to be in the circle.
Shannen (Davis) Nance (Enid, Ok / Kremlin-Hillsdale HS) and Ashley Abair (Kennedale, Tx / Kennedale HS), both sophomores, and freshman Blayr Huff (Keller, Tx / Liberty Christian) are all right-handers.
The teams met a year ago, with Hillsdale taking the opener, 3-2. SAGU won the nightcap, 5-2. There were two other doubleheaders between the teams that were rained out.
Moore is a southern suburb of Oklahoma City, 225 miles due north of Waxahachie.
Meanwhile, the SAGU Lions (8-6) also have two double-scoops of baseball on the docket at Ecclesia College (0-3) in Springdale, Arkansas.
Today’s 1:00pm doubleheader will have Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) and Nick Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS), a pair of freshman right-handers, getting the nod.
The Lions and Royals will also play two on Saturday at noon.
