WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

The Lady Lions are 5-11 and battling for a place in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament the first weekend in March. Currently 10th in the 12-team league, they are close to qualifying. The top 8 teams receive a bid to the tourney.

While injuries have made their terrain an uphill climb, the young team is improving. Fans are watching the progression of players during a challenging season, knowing the foundation for future success is under construction.

SAGU plays two road games this week.

The first is local – in nearby Cedar Hill - on Monday night at 7:30pm. Team Lioness takes on Northwood University in a single game played at Trinity Christian School’s (1313 E. Pleasant Run Rd, CH 75104) 3,000 seat gym.

The NU Lady Knights are 2-15 and in their first season of existence.

Freshman Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS) leads the team in scoring with 12.1 points per game.

Junior center Sierra Hankins (Welch, Ok / Welch HS) is second at 8.2 ppg with sophomore guard Keve (pronounced KEE-vee) Bratchett (Center, Tx / Tenaha HS) is third at 7.9 ppg.

The Lady Lions will be away from the Sheaffer Center on Saturday, Jan. 19, at Jarvis Christian College (Hawkins, Tx). Tipoff: 2:00pm.

MEN’S BASKETBALL

SAGU is currently ranked no. 21 in the NAIA (next poll released on Tuesday) and are riding a five-game winning streak.

The Lions are 14-3 and atop the RRAC with an 8-2 mark against teams in the league. They are 9-0 on the road, including three huge, recent wins.

On Thursday they whipped Our Lady of the Lake University, the defending champs, 77-70, in San Antonio; a place they previously had never won. On Saturday they defeated Paul Quinn College, 67-55.

Team Purp returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 19, at 4:00pm in East Texas against Jarvis Christian College. The Bulldogs just knocked off no. 10 ranked Texas College, 55-51, on Saturday. The Steers were in first place at the time.

Junior guard Dominique Rambo (Dallas, Tx / Oklahoma Wesleyan Univ., Trinity Christian School) is one of three players scoring in double-figures.

‘Bo nets 16.7 ppg, while senior James “Truck” Ford (Victoria, Tx / Faith Academy) and sophomore Mike Nwelue (pronounced like DWELL-way) (Lewisville, Tx / Lewisville HS) are producing 10.9 and 10.6 per game.

UPDATE: Next Home Games and SAGU TV

The next home game for both the Lady Lions and Lions is a week from Saturday, Jan. 26, when Bacone College visits. A full house is expected, so come early and don your craziest, most creative outfit!

All remaining home basketball games will be broadcast in HD by SAGU Sports Live.

BASEBALL

The Lions hold their first practice on Monday afternoon in preparation for the 2013 season. The team will play many of their home games on their new campus park.

Other home games will be played across town at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.

After graduating nine seniors last spring, expect to see a line-up filled with new faces.

SAGU has key returnees, new recruits and transfers reporting, all battling for starting positions and playing time.

Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS), a veteran catcher, will anchor the squad with leadership.

Robert Elles (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) could be the ace of the pitching staff and is one of a contingent of players from Red Oak.

The team schedule is posted on this website and their roster will be announced this week.

Playing their first 15 games in Waxahachie, the Lions begin with a pair of noon doubleheaders on campus, Jan. 25-26, against Oklahoma's Hillsdale College.

WOMEN’S SOFTBALL

The second year Lady Lions continue in their quest to build another positive women’s sports program at Southwestern.

This season will witness the squad playing a full schedule on campus, adding to the SAGU experience for students and fans.

New, talented players are about to embark on a campaign to rise above last year’s 2-28 debut.

Senior centerfielder Cassandra Mata (Crystal City, TX / Crystal City HS) will be the cog in the wheel as a catalyst.

Don’t doubt the effort of a young, developing core, which will likely be focused on the strength of their pitching staff.

The Lady Lions will hold their first practice on Tuesday afternoon behind the Sheaffer Center.

SAGU jumpstarts their new season on Feb. 8-9 with a three-game home series against Our Lady of the Lake University.

The team schedule will be posted on-line on Monday and their new roster released this week.
