Hoops Preview: Langston-SAGU

Both games on Live Stats webcast

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Tonight’s twinbill in central Oklahoma will be a clash of Big Cat cagers when Southwestern Assemblies of God University tangles with Langston University at the C.F. Gayles Fieldhouse (left).

Both schools share the same mascot, the Lions, and this evening will feature a fastbreak of felines when the Lady Lions meet at 5:30pm (CST).

SAGU is 4-6 overall and Langston is an uncharacteristic1-7.

Against teams from the Red River Athletic Conference, Southwestern is 1-3 while Langston is 1-2.

The Purple Pride and Langston have enjoyed some fiercely spirited games in the past four years, with SAGU registering a pair of hard-fought triumphs.

Coach Arlon Beadles' team handed LU a 71-61 defeat three years ago that was their first home conference loss in four years. Both teams are young and infusing new line-ups this season.

The hosts are playing under a new Head Coach, David Johnson. LU has won the past six RRAC regular season championships, four of them for Coach Jerome Willis, who is now at UT-Permian Basin.

The men’s game will follow at approximately 7:30pm. SAGU will bring a #20 national NAIA ranking and an 8-2 record into the contest against Langston, now 3-6. In the RRAC, SAGU is 3-1, LU is 1-2.

Langston surprised SAGU in double-overtime last year, 87-81, in Oklahoma.

SAGU will reportedly activate senior forward Nathaniel Duce Ward (Waco, Tx / Connally HS) for tonight's game provided he is cleared to play.
