Football, Volleyball pick up critical wins

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  A busy Homecoming Saturday saw several big wins by teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

The football Lions rolled to a 41-0 triumph over Haskell University at Lumpkins Stadium. SAGU rushed for 364 yards while the defense limited the Indians to 32.

Junior quarterback Reid Golson (Grandview, Tx / Howard Payne Univ, Grandview HS) rushed for 132 yards including an 80-yard dash for a touchdown. He also passed for two scores as the Lions improved to 2-4 overall.

In women’s soccer action, the Lady Lions fell on the road to the University of Texas at Brownsville, 6-0. The Lady Scorpions (9-3, 7-0 in RRAC) have now shutout eight straight opponents.

SAGU slipped to 5-10 overall and 3-4 in the Red River Athletic Conference. The loss snapped the Lady Lions three-game winning streak.

The men’s soccer team were thumped by UT-Brownsville (9-4-1, 8-0 in RRAC) by a 12-1 count. UTB had a 4-0 lead by the thirteenth minute en route to an 8-0 lead at the break.

Team Purp (6-9, 2-6) scored in the 70th minute when Erick Quan (San Pedro Sula, Honduras / Seran Bilingual School) converted a pass from Lee Kounas (Dallas, Tx / Townview HS). The Lions were outshot 23-10 including 15-3 on goal.

The Lady Lions volleyball team won a pair of five-set thrillers, edging both St. Thomas (14-10, 5-2 in RRAC) and Oklahoma City University (13-17 in the Sooner Athletic Conference). SAGU is now 14-10 overall and are 5-1 in the Red River.

SAGU nipped UST in the pivotal fifth game, 15-13, and avenged and earlier loss to OCU with a 15-12 victory in the final set.
