WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Three of the four fall sports teams at Southwestern Assemblies of God University are in action, at home, this weekend.
The volleyball squad is in northwest Arkansas where they will participate in the John Brown University Tournament in Siloam Springs. The Lady Lions have two matches today (2:00pm, 7:00pm) and another pair on Saturday (9:00am, 4:30pm).
Tonight’s action will be available on livestream at www.jbu.edu/athletics. Only the games involving JBU are being broadcast.
The SAGU soccer teams will host the University of Houston at Victoria on Saturday. The Lady Lions play at 2:00pm (CST) with the Lions following at 4pm.
Saturday night at Lumpkins Stadium, the Lions entertain Austin College. The kickoff is set for 7:00pm in a football game that will be aired in HD by SAGU Sports Live. Access for this service comes at no charge.
The Lady Lions (1-6) have gotten out of the gate slowly this season. They will have their hands full in the Ozarks, but could pick up a few much-needed wins.
They meet fellow Assembly of God institution, Evangel University (Springfield, Mo), today at 2:00pm. The Crusaders, from the Heart of America Conference, are 9-4. They posted a 29-6 mark in 2011. It was the Lady 'Saders best-ever record.
SAGU will then face the tourney hosts, the Golden Eagles of John Brown. The best of five match will be on-line. They are members in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
JBU is 14-2 this autumn and have a 3-1 record against teams from the Red River Athletic Conference, losing only to Wiley College. Southwestern clipped the Eagles (18-16 record) a year ago, 3-1.
Saturday morning starts with a 9am bump-set-and-volley versus Friends University (Wichita, Ks). The Falcons, 1-9 so far in 2012, hail from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference.
SAGU defeated them last fall, 3-1, when Friends went 26-11.
The fourth match pits the Purple Pride with Peru State University (Peru, Nebraska) at 4:30pm.
The Lady Bobcats play in the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference. Peru is currently 1-12 overall. Their last campaign saw them finish at 11-18.
Coach Hank Moore’s Lady Lions, who have a string of seven consecutive winning regular seasons, are set to play at home for the first time on Tuesday, September 18. They will welcome Jarvis Christian College to the Sheaffer Center after starting 2012 with 11 road dates.
Southwestern meets Houston-Victoria in a home doubleheader tomorrow.
The Lady Lions are 0-5 and have yet to find offensive rhythm. Coach Mandy Fortner's club should be healthy and will vie for their first victory. The Lady Jaguars are 3-3 after beating UT-Permian Basin, 3-1, in Odessa on Thursday.
SAGU takes on the Jaguars in men’s action at 4pm. The Lions (2-3) and UHV (3-5) have both dropped two in a row. Southwestern hopes to have a few key players return from the sideline. The Jags are an NAIA independent.
After a thrilling 27-17 victory at Howard Payne University last week, the Lions will tangle with Austin College at 7:00pm. SAGU Sports Live will air the game. The pre-game show with Rob Price and Tim Roberts will commence at 6:45pm.
SAGU is 1-1 while the ‘Roos (NCAA Division III) are 0-2. Austin College leads the series, 4-2, though the Lions prevailed last year in Sherman (Tx), 35-13.
The Kangaroos have led both of their games at the half only to come up short after intermission.
A limited number of 12-page, full-color Game Day programs will available at the gate for $3.
A preview of the football game, including a weather forecast, will be posted on the SAGU website tonight.
