Saturday Sports Summary

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University had three home games on a hot and sultry day and each were decided by the least margin possible; one point.

Both the women's and men's soccer teams hosted Sterling College (Ks) while the football team entertained #24 ranked Bethany College at Lumpkins Stadium.

The Lady Lions yielded two quick goals before battling back. They came up short in a 2-1 setback to fall to 0-2 on the young season. Sterling upped their mark to 3-0.

The Lions appeared to have a firm grip on a 1-0 lead against Sterling. A breakdown on defense yielded the equalizing tally with a minute left. SAGU recovered and scored just three minutes into overtime for a 2-1 triumph.

With 98 degree heat bearing down on the astroturf surface, Southwestern battled #24 ranked Bethany College (Ks) tooth and nail.

The Lions held the Swedes to only 238 yards and forced four turnovers. Four drives that combined for 175 yards all ended in field goals and a 12-7 lead late in the game.

A costly penalty led to a short punt that put Bethany on the Lions 35 yard line. It took just three plays to score and BC held on for a 13-12 victory. Their two TD drives combined for only 72 yards, but it was enough to rally past the Purple Pride.
