SAGU rolls to sweep of St. Thomas

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Both the men's and women's basketball teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University defeated the University of St. Thomas on Monday night in the final regular season home games for SAGU seniors.

The Lady Lions clinched a berth in the Red River Athletic Conference tournament with a 76-60 win in which they made nearly 60% of their shots in the second half. SAGU trailed at intermission, 35-28, before heating up behind 18-points from Gabby Bruner.

Kassy Cox and Nia Winston each poured in 16 and Jirah Rodriguez came off the bench with 15 to ignite a season-high 48 in the second stanza. The Lady Lions finished the regular season with a 10-20 overall mark and a 7-17 league record. They will meet Langston University (28-2) in a 4:00pm Friday quarterfinal.

The Lions used nine three-point baskets to grab a 43-23 first half lead enroute to a 72-55 triumph over the visiting Celts. Dominique Rambo and Ronald Horne led the way with 17 and 16 points respectively.

The victory avenged an earlier 76-68 setback in Houston to UST, and gave the Lions their best record since joining the NAIA in the late 1990's. Under new head coach Donnie Bostwick, they finished with a 22-8 ledger in all games while going 16-8 against RRAC competition.

Southwestern, who will host the RRAC tourney this weekend, will meet St. Thomas (17-12) at 10:00pm in the first round on Friday night. It will be the last of eight games in the Sheaffer Center.

More details will follow tonight.
