Lady Lions top Tigers, 45-37

Lions roll past Paul Quinn, 80-72

DALLAS, Texas  --  Both the women's and men's basketball teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University won on Monday night at Paul Quinn College, setting up their biggest showdowns of the seasons this Thursday.

The Lady Lions, behind a solid defense that held PQC to 15 points and 19% shooting in the first half, took the game and completed a two-game sweep this season. SAGU extended a 22-15 halftime lead to 12 points in the second half, then withstood a Lady Tigers rally to post their fourth win in the past five games.

SAGU is now 9-13 overall and 6-10 (8th) in the Red River Athletic Conference. Paul Quinn fell to 6-17 and 5-12.

The Purple Pride was led by Gabby Bruner (Peaster, Tx / Peaster HS) with 13-points, seven rebounds and three assists. Showing no signs of a concussion two weeks ago, she played 36 minutes. Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Panola JuCo, Lakeview Centennial HS) tossed in a dozen points, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She had two boards, three assists and three steals.

Shaquita Roberts (San Antonio, Tx / Byron Steele HS) had six point, seven boards and seven blocks.

The Lions took momentum in their game when Jared Gibson (Dallas, Tx / Oral Roberts Univ, Plano West HS) drained a long three-ball at the buzzer to give SAGU the lead for good at the half, 32-30.

The lead surged to double-digits until the Tigers came to within five with five to go. Craig Grigsby (Houston, Tx / Glenda Dawson HS) then connected on two three-balls on dishes from Dominique Rambo (Dallas, Tx / Oklahoma Wesleyan Univ, Trinity Christian School). SAGU made 60% of their shots in the second half.

The Lions also used their customary aggressive defense, forcing 23 turnovers, while winning the boards, 34-27. With 17 offensive rebounds, the team continues to lead the league in that hustle-statistic.

Rambo led the team with 20 points and seven assists. The headliner, however, was Duce Ward (Waco, Tx / Univ. of N.Texas, Connally HS). The junior forward scored 17 and latched onto eight boards while blocking a pair. Grigsby added 13.

Ronald Horne (Waco, Tx / Univ. of N.Texas, Waco HS) had another all-around floor game, distributing seven assists from his point guard position. He had fou rebounds and two steals. SAGU is now 17-5 overall and 11-5 in the RRAC.
