SAGU sweeps two from Bacone
Lady Lions stave off Bacone rally, 64-57
Lions struggle past Warriors, 70-57
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- For just the second time this season, both the men's and women's basketball teams from Southwestern Assemblies of God University won on the same night during a Red River Athletic Conference doubleheader.
The Lady Lions broke open a close game midway through the second half and protected the lead against an aggressive, pressing Bacone College team in a 64-57 triumph. It was SAGU's fourth win in their last six games and improved their overall record to 7-12. They are now in a three-way tie for 8th place in the league with a 4-9 mark. Bacone slipped to 8-10 and 4-9.
The team executed well down the stretch by making 18 of 20 second-half free throws. Nia Winston was one of three players in double-figures with 24 points.
A 12-3 run broke a 42-42 tie, sparked by a pair of three-pointers by Jirah Rodriguez and Winston for a 54-45 lead with 5:21 to go.
A complete report will be posted tonight.
The men's squad led throughout the game, extending a 40-26 halftime lead to 67-45 with 5:48 remaining.
The Warriors outscored the Lions 12-3 in the closing minutes, including the game's final six points. Bacone played much better than in the first meeting, when SAGU rolled to a 100-49 triumph in Muskogee, Oklahoma.
The Purple Pride made just 35% of their shots on a night when their game gave a quiet and early-leaving crowd little to cheer for. What they did do well was protecting the ball, committing just 11 turnovers, while dominating the boards, 50-29. The difference was a whopping 22-4 advantage on the offensive glass.
Jonathan Walter scored 10-points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to lead the way on a quiet, midseason night.
Southwestern lifted their won-lost record to 14-5 in all games and 8-5 in the RRAC. Bacone fell to 3-15 and 2-11.
The teams are off this weekend before returning to the court at home on Monday when they welcome Huston-Tillotson University to the Sheaffer Center. The Lady Lions will play the Rams at 5:30pm, while the Lions entertain Tillotson at 7:30pm.
The games will be available on-line in both an HD livestream broadcast as well as a Live Stats webcast.
A complete review of the Bacone game will posted later tonight.
