Exhibition to be played at Midlothian High School
Satterwhite, Campbell, Pryor, Benton and Wright competing at QB
2014 SCHEDULE TO BE RELEASED THIS WEEK
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Capping three weeks of spring practices; the Southwestern Assemblies of God University will play their annual Spring Game on Saturday, April 5, in Midlothian.
Slated for 9:30am, the two hour event will take place at Midlothian High School practice facility behind the high school. The Lions have held scrimmages against other college teams on the practice field’s artificial surface.
SAGU has had 74 players involved in spring ball, though 63 will be participating in Saturday’s exhibition. The two teams, Purple and White, were drafted according to needs.
The contest, with officials, will resemble a real game and will include special teams.
Head Coach Jesse Godding and the entire coaching staff will share responsibilities. John Allen, Defensive Coodinator, and Frank Tristan, Offensive Coordinator, will develop strategies and assess team needs following the Spring Game.
Perhaps the area most fans are anxious to follow is the battle to replace Reid Golson (Grandview, Tx / Grandview HS, Howard Payne Univ) as the Lions next starting quarterback.
Prior to college he was an All-State QB at Grandview H.S. At SAGU he set a number of school records in passing as well becoming the Lions all-time leader in rushing yards.
According to Tristan there are five quarterbacks in camp.
James Satterwhite (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) and Craig Campbell, Jr. (Pinole, Cal / Pinole Valley HS), both listed as sophomores last season, will lead Team Purple.
Satterwhite is a local product, having played at nearby Red Oak H.S. In his senior season he completed over 56% of his passes (900 yards) for seven TD's and just four interceptions while sharing the quarterbacking duties. The Hawks had a 6-4 record that year.
Campbell played for one of the Bay Area's perennial powers; Pinole Valley HS. He red-shirted last season. As a freshman for the Lions he moved from QB to Wide Receiver, catching two passes including one for a touchdown in 2011.
Three freshmen will handle the quarterbacking role for the White Team; Brandon Pryor (Crandall, Tx / Crandall HS), Venique Benton (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS) and Elijah Wright (Grand Prairie, Tx / South Grand Prairie HS).
Pryor did not see action a year ago after a prep career for the Crandall H.S. (east of Dallas) Pirates.
Benton was an electric QB for Waxahachie H.S. He played at slot receiver last fall at SAGU. Benton grabbed 19 passes, rushed 11 times and managed to complete both of his passing opportunities for 69 yards.
Wright transferred from Navarro College this spring. He played for the South Grand Prairie HS (suburb west of Dallas) Warriors.
The Spring Game will allow for players the chance to define their roles heading into summer camp. Incoming newcomers are added to the mix in August.
Many of last year's skill positions on offense; wide receivers and running backs, are scheduled to return, as is most of the offensive line.
The defense will build around key encumbants in the secondary and at linebacker while the line has a shortage this spring.
The Lions finished second in the Central States Football League last fall. Overall the team posted a 6-4 record and went 4-1 in conference play.
SAGU opens summer camp in August. They will begin a 10-game schedule on Saturday, September 6, at Bethany College (Ks).
An article on the 2014 schedule will be posted this week.
