Coach Godding honors the play of SAGU QB

Golson to play in NAIA -vs- NCAA D2 Senior Bowl

golson-looks-downfieldGREENVILLE, South Carolina  --  The National Christian College Athletic Association announced that Reid Golson, senior quarterback at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, is this week’s recipient as the National Offensive Player of the Week.

The press release stated that he broke SAGU's career record for net rushing yards as a QB with 1,941 yards, set during the season finale.

His four touchdowns; one rushing, three passing, came against the NAIA’s No. 25 ranked team, Bacone College (Ok).

Golson (Grandview, Tx / Grandview, Howard Payne Univ) threw a 26-yard TD pass to Dylan Moore (Denton, Tx / Guyer HS) with 1:40 left in the game.

After the defense forced a turnover in the red zone, the scoring strike became the difference in a 38-34 victory.

Golson, 5’11, 197, also had 53 yards on the ground.

His passing totals saw 20 completions in 33 attempts for 214 yards. He did not have an interception.

In fact, in the final three games of the season, Golson complete 64 of 95 (.674) passes for 650 yards, six TDs and no picks.

“Senior leadership was evident in Reid’s play on Saturday,” Head Coach Jesse Godding said in praise of Golson.

“His athleticism was on display throughout the night. He has always had a great arm but was very accurate against Bacone.”

“(Reid) ran efficiently,” Godding continued, “including the fourth and ten that he got by the nose of the ball.”

That play came from the Warriors 48 yard line. Trailing 34-31, in the closing minutes, Godding kept Reid and the offense on the field rather than punt.

He rolled out left, and then cut upfield where he dove over the 40, narrowly getting the first down at the 38.

Two plays later he found Moore along the sideline at the goal for the winning points. It also gave the Lions their first winning season at 6-4.

“His decision making in the option game and passing game was excellent from the start of the game,” Godding continued. “It was an excellent performance on his last night as a Lion.”

“I believe he is our first player to win this award (or any national award) two weeks in a row.”

Golson was also a finalist for the USA (Small) College Football Player of the Week as well.

Golson chosen for South Carolina Senior Bowl

He will be playing in the NCAA Division 2 vs. NAIA Bowl in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on December 21. He is likely SAGU’s first player to appear in that game.

The game will be available on-line via livestream.
