Season goals within reach at midseason

Team plays at Austin College on Saturday

snyder-dylan-vs-langstonWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The college football season is at the midway point and Southwestern Assemblies of God University has post-season play within their sight with five games yet to be played.

The Lions, even after a 41-17 loss at the hands of Langston University, are 2-3 overall and 1-1 in the Central States Football League.

Should SAGU rebound with a strong finish they could win the CSFL to earn a bid to the NAIA playoffs.

The Lions are dual members in both the NAIA and the NCCAA. The latter, the National Christian College Athletic Association, which has over 120 members, nineteen of them field a football program.

At the end of the regular season, the top two NCCAA teams who don't qualify for either the NCAA or NAIA playoffs, receive a bid to the Victory Bowl. It is played at the site of the team with the best record.

The current NCCAA standings were released today. They show the Lions in the middle of the pack, but are only one game behind in the loss column. (see standings below)

Having won four games during three of the past five seasons, the Pride can achieve their best record yet by reaching five or more wins. That would require at least a 3-2 second half.

SAGU's remaining opponents have a combined record of 9-21; Austin College (1-5), Oklahoma Panhandle State University (3-4), Wayland Baptist University (0-6), Texas College (1-4) and Bacone College (4-2). A good stretch run is viable.

This Saturday, October 19, the Lions travel 93 miles north to Sherman, Texas where they will take on Austin College. The game will begin with a 1:00pm (CST) kickoff. The 'Roos are an NCAA D3 team.

Fans can listen to the play-by-play on the SAGU Sports Network's AUDIO broadcast. It will begin at 12:50pm.

The following week, Oct. 26, is Homecoming, with OPSU coming to town. A year the Lions edged the NCAA D2 Aggies, 28-27, on the road.

Here are the current standings in the NAIA's CSFL and the NCCAA.
