Football Lions' stretch run
SAGU has pair of games left
Team remains tied for 6th in NCCAA rankings
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The season is winding down for Southwestern Assemblies of God University’s football team. Once filled with promising possibilities at 3-1, the team has endured four straight setbacks in games that appeared winnable well into the third quarter.
The Lions have two games waiting in what still could be their best record yet should they win them both, or, by splitting, SAGU could equal their most victories in a season with four.
This Saturday, October 29, they travel about 400 miles to Alva, Oklahoma to face the team that was the pre-season pick to win the Central States Football League. Northwest Oklahoma State University, also 3-5, dropped Saturday’s game to Langston University, 42-39, despite a furious rally. The kickoff is set for 4:00pm.
SAGU closes the 2011 campaign with a November 12 trip to Tyler where they will face Texas College. The 2:00pm match-up between the state’s only pair of NAIA football teams is slated for Mewbourne Field on the campus of All-Saints High School.
The CSFL standings has Langston atop the six associated teams with a 6-2 overall record, including a 3-0 conference mark. Southern Nazarene University (6-2, 2-1) will host Langston on Nov. 12.
SAGU, Bacone College and NWOSU are all knotted at 3-5. Texas College is 0-7.
Southwestern remains tied for sixth in this week’s rankings among teams vying for a berth in the NCCAA’s Victory Bowl, though the odds remain small. Azusa Pacific University (Cal) and North Greenville University (SC) lead with an identical 6-2 ledgers.
Greenville College (Ill) and Northwestern College (Minn) are a game back at 5-3, while Campbellsville University (Ky) is in fifth at 4-5. SAGU is tied with Malone University (Ohio) at 3-5.
The top two teams in the National Christian College Athletic Association meet in the annual Victory Bowl. Below is a list of games involving NCCAA teams this Saturday.
