Team Captains announced; Ables, Watson

Seven veterans return, including Judah

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The cheerleading team at Southwestern Assemblies of God University is taking shape as they head into the start of their pre-season camp.

New Cheer Coach Drea Serros has announced the squad will report on Monday, August 26 for the start of two-a-day practices.

The energetic Serros brings a resume chocked full of experience in the field; running training camps, providing service during parades, years of competitive cheering and has been involved in leadership within the Fellowship of Christian Cheerleaders.

“This year we look to cheer at some road games as well,” stated Serros. The unit has not announced their itinerary for away games, but fans will get to see them at the Lions football home opener on Saturday, September 7.

“We will have perhaps our most experienced team ever,” the coach pointed out. The ‘Spirit of SAGU’ has six returning from last season; three of them will be juniors, three others are sophomores.

The Cheer Team will have three incoming freshmen as new members.

A valuable expression of the team, Judah, will return for a third straight year. The animated mascot adds a fun element with its sideline act. Well-received by children, Judah’s interaction with fans is always a hit.

The current roster heading into camp lists nine cheerleaders and one colorfully costumed character.

Coach Serros has also announced this year’s leadership positions on the team.

Kyndra Ables, entering her third year on the squad and sophomore Katrina Watson will serve as Captains.

New Student Orientation, a giant pep rally at the beginning of the semester, will be one of their first functions. It is slated for Monday night, September 2, at 6:00pm in the Sheaffer Center.

The home opener for the football team is that Saturday, Sept. 7, when Bethany College (Kansas) visits Waxahachie. This will be the third consecutive season the Lions have played the Swedes. Last year BC won, 13-12, on a late score.

A noon kickoff is set for Lumpkins Stadium, which has a seating capacity of 9,500.

The tip-off event for SAGU basketball is an annual classic: Midnight Madness. It is scheduled for Thursday, October 24. The doors open at 11:30pm.

The Cheer Team will help welcome the new season and entertain the crowd with special cheers and gift give-aways.

Both the men's and women's basketball teams will be introduced, highlighted by a dunk competition.

Last year's three-point shootout was won by Nia Winston, of the Lady Lions.
