Cheerleading staff adds leadership
Drea Serros named Cheer Coach
Beverly Robinson returns as Cheer Advisor
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University is pleased to present Andrea Serros as the new Head Coach of the Cheer Team.
The energetic Serros has come full circle. After graduating from Cornerstone Christian School in San Antonio, she attended, cheered and graduated at SAGU.
“Jesus is so good to me! I am absolutely living out a dream,” she said this week. “I am so honored and privileged to live life with these girls,” regarding this year’s cheer team.
“First and foremost, my priority is to pour into their lives and encourage them to be all that they are called to be.”
“Most importantly,” she added, “we desire that they lead this campus, spiritually and emotionally with their spirit while using their talents and gifts in tumbling stunting and all things cheer!”
Drea (Dray-uh) is an admissions counselor on campus. At SAGU she earned a bachelor’s degree in Counseling Psychology with a minor in Marriage and Family Counseling.
Jesse Godding, SAGU’s Athletic Director, announced that Beverly Robinson, who coached the Cheer Team for eight years, has accepted a new position as Cheer Advisor.
Her primary role at SAGU is the Director of Career Services. She assists students in preparing for their future through job preparation and training. Now she will provide oversight to the cheerleading program, work with their budget and assist where needed.
“I never thought I’d be involved again with cheerleading,” she said this week. “But I am happy to serve and support the team.”
While leading the Cheer Team, she provided outstanding direction for a squad that cheered throughout both semesters for eight years. Beverly describes her new advisory role as “a back seat” to the new coach.
“She is the one in charge,” Ms. Robinson said. “Drea is responsible for everything from tryouts to training to performances.”
While she was at the helm, Beverly was responsible for the beginning of Midnight Madness, the hugely popular rally that triggers the start of the basketball season. It's the perfect stage for cheerleaders to work with the teams and the fans in a high energy setting.
This year’s Midnight Madness is set for Thursday, October 24, at 11:45pm.
Beverly hails from Oklahoma City. She accomplished her undergraduate studies at nearby Southern Nazarene University (Bethany, Ok) before completing a Master of Science degree in Counseling/Psychology at SAGU.
A proven leader whose heart for the things of God makes Beverly Robinson a valuable resource to students and SAGU.
“Beverly Robinson and Drea Serros possess the leadership and technical expertise necessary to provide positive direction to the SAGU cheerleading program,” Godding stated on Monday.
“Beverly has a long history with the cheer program,” he continued. “Administration is excited to once again have her experience aiding the program.”
“Drea has the energy and technical experience in cheerleading to coach the participants to new levels in their cheer experience. Both are excellent examples and role models for young Christian women.”
Drea follows Alicia Rogers, who served as the Cheerleading Coach in recents years. Alicia and her husband Nick are now planting a church (Harvest Time) in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
