Harris, Kirk summarize annual event

The strength and influence of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter at Southwestern Assemblies of God University is alive and well.

During the spring a team of 20 student-athletes from SAGU took part in an event they annually mark on calendars in red. The FCA Weekend of Champions was held at Lakeview Camp in nearby Maypearl.

250 junior high students from the area were on hand and, once again, SAGU FCA members made a huge impact.

Alissa Kirk and Josh Harris, senior athletes who serve in FCA leadership at SAGU, have attended their share of Weekend of Champion retreats. Both recently spoke of their experience.

Kirk, from Pataskala, Ohio, played volleyball as a defensive specialist for the Lady Lions. She won numerous awards while playing for Head Coach Hank Moore's team.

Harris was a quarterback for the Lions. The 6-foot, 2-inch Harris is from Victorville, California.

“We went to Lakeview Camp with FCA to help serve as huddle leaders. We got to be camp counselors for middle school students from across the metroplex for a weekend.

“It was a whirlwind of events with many services and outdoor games all day on Saturday. It is such a good opportunity as college students to be able to serve the Lord by helping young adults see that they can live out their Christian faith in everyday life.

“It is great to see the campers learn about God by asking questions and engaging in the services. This year's theme was “Relentless, that we are to be relentless in our pursuit of God. I have gone to many weekend of champions and have some great memories.”

“Weekend of Champions is a great opportunity to connect with middle schoolers through sports and use a weekend of fun to reach them with the love of Christ.

“There was a great variety of kids but it is really cool to see them connect and have fun and grow closer to Christ.

“Being a huddle leader is a great experience and has been a growing experience for me each time I have done it.”
