Three game home series vs. Okla. Baptist starts today
Thursday DH at Waxahachie Sports Complex; Friday on campus
Team Comparison, Starting Pitching Announced
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Hosting the nation’s No. 1 ranked team, perhaps for the first time in school history; Southwestern Assemblies of God University has a tall order on tap for today and Friday.
Oklahoma Baptist University, 37-6 overall and 16-4 against the field in the Sooner Athletic Conference, retained the No. 1 spot in the Top 25 Coaches Poll this week for the second successive week.
During their current seven-game win streak the Bison have outscored the opposition, 103-14; that is 14.7 runs per game while allowing just 2.0.
SAGU, 18-24 and 8-13 in the SAC, will face OBU in a twinbill on Thursday at the Waxahachie Sports Complex. Game One begins at noon (CST).
The action will take place at 151 Broadhead Road, just north over 287; across from Whataburger. Inside the complex, which houses 25 different athletic fields, veer back to the far right to diamond #7.
Sunscreened bleachers, clean restrooms and concessions are adjacent.
There is plenty of paved parking and admission is free to the public.
A 20% chance of scattered showers prompted a change in game time. It was originally set to begin at 2:00pm.
The National Weather Service expects temperatures to range from 63 at noon to 69 by 4:00pm. South, southeasterly winds of 9-11 mpg are likely.
Friday’s single, nine-inning game is also scheduled for 12 noon. It will be played on campus.
Mostly cloudy conditions with a high of 76 are anticipated.
The Bison have played two-thirds of their games at home, where they are 26-3. On the road they have an SAC-best 11-3 mark. SAGU is 12-13 in home games.
Both OBU and SAGU are fighting for strategic positions heading into the last week of the regular season. The Bison lead No. 10 Oklahoma City University (28-13 / 16-5 in SAC) by one-half game.
After facing the Lions, OBU has three games at crosstown St. Gregory’s University (12-28 / 4-17) next week.
Seventh place SAGU trails sixth place Science & Arts of Oklahoma (19-20 / 9-12 in SAC) by one game, while holding the same margin over Mid-America Christian University (12-25 / 7-14 in SAC).
The Top 8 teams qualify for the conference tournament, May 2-5. It will be held in both Oklahoma City and Shawnee, Ok.
The Lions line-up hasn’t been released, though the three starting pitchers should feature a pair of lefties and one right-hander.
Jeremy Cross (Americus, Ga / Harker Heights HS, University of Dallas) and Pedro “Tres” Ortiz (Lorena, Tx / Lorena HS) and Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) are likely to get the nod from Head Coach Sam Blackmon.
LHP Cross, a senior, is 3-3 this season. Freshman LHP Ortiz, 3-7, has pitched well but has often gotten minimal run support. Pisors, 5-3, is a sophomore righty.
RHP Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS), 3-2, is a sophomore and a viable choice.
Due to weak signal issues there is no media coverage (video, audio or LiveStats) for the series. Following the game, when the box scores are posted on the NAIA website, the digital play-by-play will be accessible.
