Campos, Flattery, Garza to compete Saturday in Oklahoma

Freshman JOSE CAMPOSWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University has entered the Sooner Athletic Conference track championship this Saturday in Shawnee, Oklahoma.
The meet will be held at the Eddie Hurt, Jr. Memorial Track on the campus of Oklahoma Baptist University.

First year Head Coach Jason Covarrubias directs both the men’s and women’s Cross Country teams. They had an action-packed inaugural season in the fall.

Covarrubias led members of the XC teams in three track meets this semester, all competing in distance events to maintain base conditioning. Those meets were hosted by Oklahoma Baptist, Midwestern State University (Wichita Falls, Tx) and Hardin-Simmons University (Abilene, Tx).

OBU is in the NAIA, Midwestern is a member in the NCAA’s Division II, while Hardin-Simmons is from the NCAA Division III.

Three runners, all freshmen, have qualified for the SAC track meet; Jose Campos (Luling, Tx / Luling HS), Luke Flattery (Springfield, Mo / Central HS) and Destiny Garza (Aldine, Tx / MacArthur HS).

The trio will each compete in the 1500 meters (0.93 miles) and the 800 meter race (two laps on a 400 meter track).

“It has been a great year for our cross country kids,” Coach Covarrubias said this week. “They have been competing in a couple of distance events in track this spring.”

“All three have set Freshman DESTING GARZApersonal records in both events,” he said.

“I believe that distance runners run cross country for track and track for cross country.  You have to have the conditioning to compete in track and have to have the speed from track to race on cross country! These runners are getting ready for cross country!”

The 5-foot-4 Campos holds the SAGU records in the 800 and 1500 with times of 2:04 and 4:19 respectively.

He is five seconds away from qualifying for the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National meet. It will be held in May in Rome, Georgia.

Garza, at 5’1, has set the bar high with school records of 2:41 and 5:36!
