AUSTIN, Texas -- After enjoying home-cooking and familiar environs for three weeks, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team is on the road for the first time.
The Lions, sporting a 7-5 early season record, will play two doubleheaders against Huston-Tillotson University. Friday's first pitch is set for a 2:00pm (CST) start. Saturday's twinbill begins at 1:00pm.
There is no announced broadcast for video, audio or LiveStats for fans.
The series is set for Downs Field, which once was home to the Austin Black Senators. Among the list of famous players who have performed there is Satchel Paige and Willie Mays.
From the Red River Athletic Conference, HTU is 1-6 after dropping three at home to Loyola University (La). The Rams began the season against Bethany College (Ks), also at home. They won only the finale of four-games with the Swedes.
The expected pitching rotation for the Lions includes a pair of southpaws and two right-handers.
Pedro "Tres" Ortiz (Lorena, Tx / Lorena HS ) is scheduled to start the first game, with fellow lefty Jeremy Cross (Americus, Ga / Harker Heights HS, Univ. of Dallas ) on the mound in today's nightcap.
Ortiz is 1-2. Cross has yet to be involved in a decision.
Saturday's projected starters are Tucker Burt (N.Richland Hills, Tx / Westlake Academy ) and Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS ). Both are 2-1 on the young season.
Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) will likely miss a second start to rest a minor injury.
First year Head Coach Sam Blackmon responded to the names and order of the rotation with one word, "tentative." That translates to 'subject to change' in "Coach Speak."
SAGU carries a .327 collective team batting average into the series. Their foes are hitting .281. In terms of pitching, the Lions have a 4.07 earned run average (ERA).
HTU is batting .246 through seven games. Their opponents are at .318, which helps explain a 7.90 ERA.
The Rams have struggled in recent years though they own a seven game win streak against the Lions.
Over the past five seasons they have gone 59-171 (.256). They were 12-42 last spring. During that stretch HTU leads the series with SAGU, nine games to two.
Results will be posted on-line following the games and at the Sooner Athletic Conference website at: http://www.soonerathletic.org/sport/0/6.php
Note about HTU: Samuel Huston (pronounced like Houston) College combined with Tillotson College in 1952.
