Weather Forecast calls for cloudy and cold
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team (4-0) has announced the addition of a doubleheader for this coming weekend.
Head Coach Sam Blackmon released plans to host Southern Nazarene University on Saturday, February 8, on campus. The twinbill is set to start at noon.
The Crimson Storm are members of the NCAA Division II. Currently at 1-1 after a split with Mid-America Christian University, they also had two games washed out on Monday.
SNU went 20-25 last spring during their first season in the Great American Conference (D2). Prior they were in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
Head Coach Robert Lee is beginning his third at the helm of the Storm.
The weather forecast for the weekend has been upgraded. Originally calling for a chance of rain and/or a light snow mix, the National Weather Service is expecting mostly cloudy conditions. A high of 39 on Friday will improve to 47 on Saturday.
As for Thursday’s home doubleheader against Central Christian College (Ks), hot chocolate is advised; mostly cloudy and 33 degrees.
Thursday’s action will take place at 4:00pm at the Waxahachie Sports Complex. CCC went 13-39 last year.
The pitching rotation has not been announced, though the right-handed Red Hawk duo of Jarrod Pisors (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) and Hayden Killebrew (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS) would figure to start against the Tigers on Thursday.
Both registered wins over the weekend, with Killebrew (1-0, 0.00 ERA) getting a shutout. Pisors (1-0, 1.29 ERA) pitched six shutout innings before allowing a run in the seventh.
That would mean that Tucker Burt (N.Richland Hls, Tx /Westlake Academy ) and Pedro “Tres” Ortiz (Lorena, Tx / Lorena HS ) would take the hill on Saturday. Burt (1-0, 0.00 ERA), at 6’5, also hurled a three-hit shutout, while Ortiz (1-0, 1.80 ERA) was one of the three starters who didn’t allow a walk.
SAGU leads the NAIA in batting after one week. The team collectively batted .447 in the four-game sweep of Hillsdale College.
Individually, Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS) tops the Sooner Athletic Conference with a .727 batting average. The senior collected eight hits in eleven at bats.
Denton was nominated for SAC Player of the Week. He had three doubles, a triple and two RBI’s in three games.
The POW winner was Matt Page of Oklahoma Baptist University. He drove in 10 runs during a 6-for-9 week. He had four doubles, a triple, and a homer and was walked six times.
Two other Lions are the top five in hitting.
Rightfielder Tallon Ralstin (Cortez, Colo / Cortez HS ) is third at .636 while shortstop Preston Hornbeck (McKinney, Tx / Heston JC ) is fourth with a .571 stick.
Ralstin and Nathan Bish (Euless, Tx / Lyon College (Ark) ) are tied for second in RBI’s (Runs Batted In) per game at 2.0.
On the mound, Burt is tied for the top spot in strikeouts per game at 9.0.
Jonathan Santiago (Arlington, Tx / Bowie HS ) and Brock Schneider (Arlington, Tx / Martin HS ) are first and second in stolen bases with five and two respectively.
