Grand Slam leads to Lions loss
Loss to Mountaineers snaps 3-game winning streak
SAGU hosts Texas College on Friday and Saturday
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- A grand slam homer off the bat of Brad Holmes proved decisive in a game between Southwestern Assemblies of God University and visiting Schreiner University on Tuesday afternoon.
Trailing 1-0 in the sixth inning, Holmes crushed a 1-0 pitch over the leftfield fence to highlight a seven-run outburst in what became an 8-1 win by the Mountaineers.
A double, single and a walk preceeded Holmes' one-out blast to give Schreiner (SHRY-nuhr) a 5-0 lead.
The Lions collected nine hits, but couldn't manage to deliver with runners on base until the bottom of the eighth.
Nick Sheffield (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS), who has been out for weeks with a nagging injury, started the rally with a leadoff walk.
The co-captain then moved to third on a double to right-center by Taylor Froelich (Lee's Summit, Mo / Central Christian College, LS West HS).
"Chef" tagged and scored on Jared Denton's (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS) one-out sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Lions did not take advantage of several scoring opportunities, beginning with a two-on double play to short-circuit the first inning. Two runners were stranded in the second on a fielder's choice.
After Schreiner got the game's first run in the top of the fifth, the Lions bid for the equallizer came up short.
When Rockie Davis (Santa Fe, Tx / Santa Fe HS) singled to left, it ended seven straight outs. He was bunted into scoring position by Bryant Threadgill (Whiteright, Tx / Dallas Christian College, Whiteright HS), and then stole third.
A ground ball to the pitcher and a ground out to second ended the frame.
An inning later, down 8-0, the Lions failed to score with two on and two out on a fly to center.
Justin Dossey (Aubrey, Tx / Murray State College (Ok), Aubrey HS), hammered a two out double to deep left in the seventh, but another fly to centerfield left him stranded.
The ninth saw Davis and Colten Conner (Flower Mound, Tx / Flower Mound HS) get on base with singles, but two fielder's choices and a ground out to third finished the game.
Davis and Froelich both went 2-for-4, and five others had a hit apiece for SAGU.
Micah Thompson (Gatesville, Tx / Gatesville HS) went five and one-third innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs. He walked two and struck out three. It was the freshman's first loss after winning one and saving one.
Nick Turley (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian), Montana Chitty (Lake Worth, Tx / Lake Worth HS) and Dossey pitched the final innings. Scheiner collected 14 hits and four walks.
SU's Matt Valley got the win as he threw six shutout innings, permitting five hits and two walks. He fanned three.
The loss snapped Southwestern's three-game winning streak. The team is now 13-17 overall.
Schreiner is now 7-15. They have won two of their last three games by the same 8-1 score after dropping eight in a row.
SAGU returns to the field this weekend when they host a three-game series against Texas College (7-19).
The Steers and Lions, who are tied for sixth in the Red River Athletic Conference (3-6 league records), play one game on campus on March 15 at 4:00pm.
On Saturday the teams play a doubleheader that begins at noon.
