Mustangs score last six runs, top Lions 9-3
Nine seniors honored on Saturday
SAGU to play Tuesday in Grand Prairie
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The rubber game of the series between Southwestern Assemblies of God University and New Mexico’s University of the Southwest was nearly a carbon-copy of game two, with the visitors pulling away late to claim both the game and the series.
USW (17-26), battling for a berth in next week’s Red River Athletic Conference tournament, and SAGU (13-25) were tied at 3 on a blustery spring day at the Waxahachie Sports Complex.
The Mustangs nudged ahead 5-3 against the Lions’ senior ace Nic Morgan (Ft. Worth, Tx / LeTourneau University, Boswell HS). With two runners on base and two outs, Head Coach Jon Shockley went to the bullpen.
Talented freshman lefty Zach Worrell (Ft. Worth, Tx / Central Christian College, LD Bell HS), who pitched a shutout earlier in the week, gave up consecutive singles. The second one, a line-drive to centerfield, scored two runs.
Like Friday night’s result, when a late 1-1 game was turned quickly into a 7-2 setback, Saturday’s matinee went south as well. The Mustangswent on to a 9-3 victory, evening their league record at 12-12.
Still, the Lions improved starting pitching held USW to 17 runs in the three games after yielding 26 to a 15-32 Mustangs team a year ago.
Dominic Denney (Medford, Ore / North Eugene HS, La Cueva HS) had a solid game with a pair of base hits. Southwestern had three opportunities on Saturday to break open the tight game, but each time came away one-hit shy.
Freshman Rockie Davis (Santa Fe, Tx / Santa Fe HS) hurled a complete game six-hitter in a 3-1 win on Friday.
Double-dip on Tuesday
The Lions will play two games against Arlington Baptist College on Tuesday, April 17. The twinbill is set for a 1:00pm start at the home of the Grand Prairie AirHogs minor league team. QuikTrip Park (1600 Lone Star Parkway) is located just north of I-30 off of Beltline Road.
SAGU and ABC split an earlier doubleheader. Last year the Patriots went 2-1 against the Lions, outscoring Southwestern 27-11.
