Lions host #2 ranked LSU-Shreveport
Teams will meet twice Friday
Twi-Light doubleheader starts at 4:30pm
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- The college baseball series between Southwestern Assemblies of God University and the nation’s #2 ranked team, Louisiana State University in Shreveport, has been slightly adjusted for this weekend.
The three-game series will begin with a doubleheader on Friday, March 30, beginning at 4:30pm (CST). Originally it was a single contest. The second game will follow the first by twenty-minutes, starting approximately between 6:30-7:00pm.
SAGU, 11-19 overall, will have their hands full with the NAIA perennial power.
LSU-Shreveport has the highest team batting average (.344) in the Red River Athletic Conference, averaging 9.35 runs per game. They balance that with the best earned run average (ERA) at 2.63.
The Lions will take on the River Pilots (27-3) at 1:00pm on Saturday.
The change in game times was made to allow for an earlier return for LSUS, whose campus is 210-miles east of Dallas.
Shreveport and River Pilots, then and now
Shreveport, located on the Red River, opened the way for commerce when major Henry Shreve and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers cleared the log-jammed passageway with modified riverboats 175 years ago.
Steamboats then shipped cotton and agriculture as the area, who honored Shreve in their new name, became the state's first major city.
Presently, River Pilots ship baseball wins to the tune of 44 per season over the past six years. They have won 13 of their last 14 games, including their last eight. Their losses have all been by a single run.
LSU-Shreveport, with an enrollment of 4,500, went 47-15 a year ago, their first in the RRAC.
SAGU announces starting hurlers for the series
Southwestern first-year Head Coach Jonathan Shockley, who announced the schedule change on Wednesday, also released the Lions’ probable pitching rotation for the series.
Freshman Zach Worrell (Ft. Worth, Tx / Central Christian College, LD Bell HS) and senior Nic Morgan (Ft. Worth, Tx / LeTourneau Univ, Boswell HS), a pair of lefthanders, will start Friday’s twinbill. Sophomore righty John Savis (Canton, Tx / Canton HS) will be on the mound Saturday.
“LSUS is now ranked #2 in the NAIA polls,” Coach Shockley said on Tuesday. “Coach Rocke Musgrave has built a solid program and they will be a first class team. I've heard so many good things about them. We look forward to playing them this weekend.”
The National Weather Service is calling for mostly cloudy conditions on Friday with a high of 80 degrees. Saturday should be slightly improved at 82 and a partly cloudy sky.
The series will be played at the Waxahachie Sports Complex (1001 Broadhead Rd). Fans should exit I-35 onto Hwy 287 East.
Take the Broadhead Road exit; turn left (north) to go over 287. Turn left into the WSC across from the Whataburger and Show Biz theatre.
Inside the complex, turn right, and proceed to the far trio of diamonds to Field #7. Admission and parking are free. Shaded seating, concessions and restrooms are available.
