Northwood takes pair from Lions
SAGU (9-8) hosts Texas Wesleyan on Friday
CEDAR HILL, Texas -- After an impressive outing against #24 ranked Northwood University on Friday afternoon, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader to the Knights on Saturday, 10-1 and 15-3.
The Lions were held in check by Clayton Woodruff in the first game. He threw a complete game, three-hitter to improve his record to 3-0. The right-hander struck out six and did not issue a walk.
Northwood broke open a 3-0 game with two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to pull away. The Knights, 10-3-1 overall and 5-0-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference, used 11 hits, six walks and an uncharacteristic six Southwestern errors to pave the way to the win.
SAGU (9-8, 0-6 in RRAC) was shutout until the top of the seventh inning. Senior outfielder Ben Chavez (Roswell, NM / NM Military Institute, Gateway Christian HS) unloaded on a Woodruff offering, sending it over the 385-foot marker in deep left-centerfield to spoil the shutout.
Freshman right-hander Rockie Davis (Sante Fe, Tx / Santa Fe HS) (1-3) took the loss.
The second game began with two misplayed flies in leftfield, an infield error and an overthrown pickoff attempt, setting the stage for a four-run Northwood first inning.
They chased starter Robert Elles (Red Oak, Tx / Tyler JuCo, Red Oak HS) with a three-run triple in the fifth inning. It was the freshman lefty’s first loss of the young season. He was credited with a splendid pickoff play in the first inning, nabbing Edwin Arroyo.
Seven errors did not help his cause. He allowed eight hits and struck out three in four and one third innings.
John Savis (Canton, Tx / Canton HS) pitched a hitless, scoreless sixth while striking out one.
SAGU scored once in the second, fourth and seventh frames.
Taylor Froelich (Lee's Summit, Mo / Lee's Summit West HS) got the team’s first run. Aboard on an infield single, he stole second and trotted home when Jacob Spivey (Georgetown, Tx / Harker Heights HS) lined an RBI single to centerfield.
Second baseman Donovan Vess (Ft. Worth, Tx / Eastfield College, Lake Worth HS) crushed a pitch to the wall in centerfield and darted into third with a triple. He scored seconds later on a wild pitch to draw SAGU to within 5-2.
The Lions’ final tally came in the form of a one-out single to center by Davis which allowed Dustin Jett (Patterson, La / Patterson HS) to cross the dish.
Spivey and Vess led the team with two hits apiece. Enrique Rodriguez (Ft. Worth, Tx / Ranger JuCo, Nolan Catholic HS) added a single. Froelich (FRAY-lick) picked a pair of walks. David McLain (Cleveland, Okla / Cleveland HS) got his first action of the season, playing third base.
