Baseball Lions take on Northwood

Three-games in nearby Cedar Hill

Likely rotation: Morgan, Davis, Elles

CEDAR HILL, Texas -- The Southwestern Assemblies of God University baseball team has a weekend road series at nearby Northwood University that begins today at 2:00pm.

The Lions, 9-5 overall and 0-3 in the Red River Athletic Conference, will travel around 25 miles to face their closest opponent in the #24 ranked Knights. Northwood is 7-3-1 in all games and 2-0-1 in the RRAC. Their most recent game was suspended on account of darkness. They were tied 1-1 with Texas College in extra innings at the time.

Knights Field is located (1114 West F.M. 1382) west of highway 67 on 1382 (east of 67, it is called Belt Line Rd) near Joe Pool Lake. Their campus entry is on the south side of 1382 near Clark Road.

The teams will meet for a twinbill on Saturday, February 25, at noon.

Northwood has a 14-3 record against Southwestern dating back to 2006, including a 7-3 mark at Knights Field. They have won the last eleven meetings in the series. The Lions took 2-of-3 at Northwood in 2008.

Head Coach Jonathan Shockley will send 6-foot-3, senior southpaw Nic Morgan (Ft. Worth, Tx / LeTourneau Univ, Boswell HS) to the hill today at 2:00pm. The lanky lefty is 2-1 so far in this young season.

Saturday’s doubleheader will likely see freshman right-hander Rockie Davis (Santa Fe, Tx / Santa Fe HS) go in the opener while Robert Elles (Red Oak, Tx / Tyler JuCo, Red Oak HS), a left-handed freshman, is the probable starter in the finale. Davis is 1-2, while Elles (like Ellis) is seeking his first decision.

Finishing second to #6 LSU-Shreveport (47-15) last spring, #21 Northwood (37-16) failed to receive a bid to the NAIA playoffs when they lost to UT-Brownsville (35-26) in the RRAC semi-finals. LSUS won their first five playoff games in the national tourney before losing two straight.

Next Home Date: Friday, March 2

SAGU returns home for a solo conference game against Texas Wesleyan University on Friday, March 2. Played at the Waxahachie Sports Complex, the contest is slated for a 4:00pm first pitch. The teams will play twice the following day at Ft. Worth’s LaGrave Field.

The Lions will introduce their new home uniforms against the Rams in the opener of the three-game set.
