The Fog that ate the game
Doubleheader cancelled by Longview haze
SAGU to host 3-game home series this weekend
LONGVIEW, Texas -- Fans didn't need the see the dense fog advisory from the National Weather Service to know something was in the air. They could barely see anything at all.
Southwestern Assemblies of God University and LeTourneau University were set to play a non-conference baseball doubleheader this evening. It was going to be both the home opener as well as the first game under the newly installed lights at the refurbished Conrad-Vernon Field at LeTourneau.
The teams fought through a thickening mist in the first three innings before the umpire and game officials finally called the game in the bottom of the fourth.
SAGU head coach Jonathan Shockley and LETU's Robin Harriss will decide later whether the games will be made up at a later date or cancelled this spring.
The Lions lead 5-1 heading into the bottom of the third as John Savis (Canton, Tx / Canton HS) was sailing through the Yellowjackets. He allowed one hit up til that point.
Taylor Froelich (Lee's Summit, Mo / Lee's Summit West HS) and Ben Chavez (Roswell, NM / NM Military Institute, Gateway Christian) both went 2-for-2 and had RBI doubles to power the SAGU attack. "Chavo" also drove in a run during the team's 4-run third with a shot past the shortstop.
As conditions worsened severely, LeTourneau began to peck away at the lead until Chris Stanley (Harker Heights, Tx / Harker Heights HS) entered the game in the bottom of the fourth. There is no truth to the story that Stanley warmed up in a trenchcoat.
That's when the game was disrupted. LeTourneau's Matt Leftwich was at bat (see photo) when play was halted. After a 30-minute delay the game was called.
"It was the most dangerous fog I've ever seen on the baseball field," Coach Shockley said while returning home from the 145-mile trip.
Weekend Home Series vs. HT Rams
The teams, who are members of the Red River Athletic Conference, will play twice in a Saturday doubleheader that begins at noon. Weather is expected to range from 58 to 64 degrees with a 50% chance of rain showers on Friday that decline steadily on Saturday.
Coach Shockley plans to send Nic Morgan (Ft. Worth, Tx / LeTourneau Univ, Boswell HS) to the hill on Friday. The senior lefty is 2-1 so far this season.
On Saturday, look for a pair of freshmen; Rockie Davis (Santa Fe, Tx / Santa Fe HS) and Robert Elles (Red Oak, Tx / Tyler JuCo, Red Oak HS) to start. Davis, a righty, is 1-2, while the left-hander Elles has yet to earn a decision.
Mendoza Starts at DH
Mario Mendoza (Ft. Worth, Tx / Grambling State Univ, Poly HS) was cleared to play following an injury to his throwing arm. He started the game as the Lions Designated Hitter and batted leadoff. He went hitless in two at bats. Since the contest was called before it become an official game, the statistics do not count.
