SAGU signs Arcadia's Bruce Johnson
Former All-Stater transfers to play for Lions
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- Southwestern Assemblies of God University has acquired Bruce Johnson as a student-athlete who will play for the baseball team.
A transfer from Central Christian College (Ks) and Grambling State University (La), the 5-foot-9, 187-pounder comes to the Lions as a second baseman and shortstop. He bats and throws right-handed.
Johnson was selected All-State and All-District honors for his hometown high school in Arcadia. Suited up in black and gold, he played for Hornets’ Head Coach Craig Jenkins.
Halfway between Shreveport and Monroe, Arcadia (pop. 3,041) is located in northern Louisiana. The town is known for its Bonnie and Clyde Ambush Museum. The famous fugitives were slain in Arcadia in 1934.
He has also played club ball for Gametime Academy and Coach Thad Markray. He batted .287 this summer for a team that posted an 18-8 record.
Johnson plans to major in Sports Management at SAGU.
His parents are Bruce and Loura Johnson. He has a sister, Tieranny.
His rhythm at the plate coincides with his skill on the 88’s. Johnson is a regular at his home church, New Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, where he plays the drums for the choir.
SAGU went 14-34 in the spring. The Lions’ 29-man roster comprised of 25 freshmen (17) and sophomores (8), and figure to be young again next season.
New Head Coach Sam Blackmon expects a core of returning players when fall camps begins. They will contend with a crop of new recruits and transfers for positions on the team.
Following the holidays the Lions will resume practices in January. The season will begin approximately three or four weeks later.
SAGU joins the Sooner Athletic Conference. The 11-team circuit has four teams from Texas, six in Oklahoma and one in Arkansas. The S.A.C. will launch a new website at the end of August.
