SAGU senior guard, the SAC's scorer, pours in 25

page-councilWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University ran up against a deep and talent No. 5 ranked Oklahoma Baptist University team on Thursday at the Sheaffer Center. It resulted in a 77-48 loss to the Lady Bison.

OBU, 22-3 overall and 14-1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, vaulted to a 26-7 start. It established a pace of play that proved a major challenge for SAGU (12-13 / 6-9 in SAC).

The Lady Lions answered that early surge by Gang Green.

Battling back, the team used one of their most aggressive efforts on the boards coupled with strong play from guards Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Lakeview Centennial HS, Panola College , Panola JC) and Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS ).

Trailing 34-12 with four minutes left in the first half, SAGU assembled an impressive 11-0 run that pared their deficit to 34-23

Hill set up Winston on the perimeter where she triggered a 3-ball to begin the rally. Charity Page (Nacogdoches, Tx / Nacogdoches HS ) blocked a shot by Jalissa Council. It led to a driving layup by Winston six seconds later.

Council, OBU’s 6’1 center, leads the visitors in scoring (16ppg). Laken Ward (Cleveland, Ark / Wonderview HS ) forced her into a miss in the paint, grabbed the rebound and hit Hill in transition.

She fed Winston on the wing, resulting in a bucket. Winston was fouled, then swished the and-one. SAGU was within 34-20.

The Lions squeezed the Green into a turnover, with Winston running another fast break. She pitched to Hill on the edge for a triple. Hill thrilled the crowd when she buried the bomb.winston-drives-obu

They would draw no closer than that; in debt, 34-23 with 2:33 to go.

A mini-run by OBU lifted them on top at the half, 41-25. Winston and Charity Fowler, the Bison’s 5’8 junior guard, each netted 15 points in the opening stanza.

At the break the Lady Lions were only outscored 23-20 by the visitors’ starting five.

Playing like the No. 5 team in the nation, OBU asserted themselves during a 16-5 start in the second half. Leading 57-30, they never relented.

After making 10-of-28 (36%) in the first half, the Lady Lions were held to 6-of-26 (23%) shooting the rest of the way.

OBU’s depth outscored the host’s bench by a commanding 38-16.

Every time Team Purple thought they may be able to cage the Bison, another Herd stampede of reserves would negate the optimism.

Three guards paced the Lady Lions, with Winston leading all scorers. She was credited with 25 points. The SAC scoring leader netted three triples and six-of-eight free throws.

Hill and Monica Dorsey (Garland, Tx / Sachse HS ) added seven and six points apiece.

OBU countered with four players reaching double-digits. Fowler led with 21 while Cameerah Graves, a 5’7 guard, tossed in 17.

Page and Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS ) performed admirably on the boards, latching onto eight and seven respectively.

Shaquita Roberts (San Antonio, Tx / Byron Steele HS ) had five rebounds while Ward and Brittany Griffin (Rockwall, Tx / Rockwall Christian ) registered four apiece.

Roberts, a 6-foot senior, continues to lead the SAC in blocking shots.

The Lady Lions held their own on the glass, though OBU finished with a 45-37 advantage.
