SAGU has a good shot at SAC and NCAA tourneys

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The youngest team in the Sooner Athletic Conference, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University, enters the final week of the regular season with a good chance to qualify for post-season action.

SAGU has three games remaining, all at home this weekend against Northwood University (29-18 / 16-7 in SAC). The series will be played on campus; a Friday doubleheader at noon and a single, nine-inning game at 3:00pm on Saturday.

The Lions have not been to the conference tournament since joining the NAIA in the late 1990’s.

According to previous Sports Information Director and baseball Assistant Coach Clay Scarborough, SAGU came close to making the conference tourney once.

Bacone College defeated Northwood on the last day of the season,” he said. “They got in instead of the Lions.”

SAGU now has the opportunity to cross the post-season threshold.

The Top 8 in the SAC will advance to participate in pool play of two groups of four-teams during May 2-5. Teams will play the other three teams in their group, with the winner of each group earning a position in the championship game.

The Lions are in seventh place and are battling St. Gregory's University and Mid-America Christian University. They are tied in eighth, one game back of the Lions.

Oklahoma Baptist University (Shawnee, Ok) will serve as host.

The Lions are 18-27 and currently carry a seven-game losing streak. Six of the setbacks came to No. 1 Oklahoma Baptist University and No. 10 Oklahoma City University.

The Knights have been a perennial winner in recent years. Over the past 5 seasons they have gone 44-13 (last year), 24-20-1 in 2012, 39-18 in 2011, 40-14 in 2010 and 36-19 in 2009.

Since 2009 Northwood has won all 16 meetings. The Lions took 2-of-3 in 2008, winning 8-5, losing 10-5 and winning the finale, 5-2. Both wins were late comebacks.

The Lions can also enter the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Central Regional tournament, reportedly, by winning one game in the Northwood series.

The NCCAA event will be hosted by Oklahoma Christian University (NCAA Division II) during May 6-9. SAGU has been to the NCCAA Regional previously.

This year’s team has made significant strides, especially on defense. Breaking the Knights’ mastery this weekend will mean more than its own reward.

Reportedly, several players who have recently been out of commission will be available. Clay Gentle (Fredericksburg, Tx / Fredericksburg HS), Jared Denton (Mission, Tx / Sharyland HS) and possibly Jonathan Santiago (Arlington, Tx / Bowie HS) are set to return.

The team will recognize their four seniors in a brief ceremony prior to the 3pm finale on Saturday.

Approximately 20 minutes before the first pitch they will honor Jeremy Cross (Americus, Ga / Harker Heights HS, Univ of Dallas), Tali Fletcher (Monahans, Tx / Monahans HS), Nick Sheffield (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS) and Denton.
