Left-hander hails from Lorena, Texas

Assistant Coach Rickman 'Votes for Pedro'

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The third member of this year’s baseball recruiting class has always been known for being third.

Southwestern Assemblies of God University signed Pedro Ortiz, III last week as a student-athlete. His preferred first name, “Tres, is Spanish for three.

The 5-foot-10 Ortiz, who bats and throws as a left-hander, pitched and played first base for Class 3A Lorena High School.

Under Head Coach Greg Blanchard, the Leopards went 17-12-1 this year and were 21-11 in Ortiz’ junior campaign.

Lorena (pop. 1,662) is fifteen miles south of Waco.

In his senior season he went 3-3 on the mound with a 1.79 earned run average. He also picked up a save and was credited with a number of pickoffs. In 27 innings he struck out 18 batters.

Ortiz was 4-1 as a junior with a 2.12 ERA, fanning 21 in 29 frames. At the plate he batted .280 and drove in 27 runs.

He has picked up valuable experience playing for several club or premier level teams including the Dallas Patriots and the Buzz Lightning of Waco.

Ortiz (pronounced or-TEES) also earned two letters playing football at Lorena. As an outside linebacker, the Leopards went 10-3 during his senior season.

He was signed by SAGU Assistant Coach Andrew Rickman (pictured above, left), who, coincidently, also coaches linebackers for the Lions football team.

Prior to moving to north-central Texas, Ortiz lived 18 miles from Washington D.C., in Fairfax, Virginia. There, he attended and played for the Robinson Secondary School Rams.

Robinson is the largest high school (3,939 enrolled) in the Old Dominion State.

He suited up for Burke Baseball in Fairfax, the Barons of Falls Church, Va. and the iFungo Revolution of Louisville, Kentucky.

Pedro's parents are Pete and Collyn. He has a twelve year old brother in Troy. His military family has given a sense of mobility and culture to the family.

Tres was born in Enterprise, Alabama, home to the Army’s Fort Rucker and the famous Boll Weevil Monument.

Ortiz, who was a regular on the A & B Honor Roll, plans to study Digital Media Arts at SAGU.

He has also enjoyed his involvement at Journey Lorena, which holds its church services in the Commons area at his high school. There he has been active in the 24/7 youth group, taking part in their many service projects.

The Lions have already acquired third baseman Josh Terry (Daingerfield HS / Lone Star, Tx) and right-handed pitcher Tucker Burt (Westlake Academy / North Richland Hills, Tx).

Announcements regarding more recruits will be posted this summer.

SAGU has joined the Sooner Athletic Conference, considered the premier league in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA).

The team will hold fall camp in September and October and begin playing in January.

The Sooner boasted of five ranked teams in the final NAIA Coaches Poll in the spring.

The Lions play their home games at two locations in Waxahachie.

Their on-campus practice field was renovated a year ago and played host to nine games this spring. SAGU was 5-4 in those games, including their first three-game sweep of a conference series in five years.

The Waxahachie Sports Complex, located on Broadhead Road at highway 287, served the remaining 20 home contests.

Overall, the Lions were 11-18 at home. They were 11-9 after they swept Wiley College in March. A 1-18 finish led to the Purple Pride's 14-34 record.

The WSC has 25 fields for baseball, softball, soccer and football.
