SAGU stuns No. 25 Bacone College, 38-34

Watch the stirring comeback in high definition video

sagu-sports-live-shieldWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  It was just over five weeks ago when Southwestern Assemblies of God University capped their first-ever winning football season with a dramatic 38-34 victory over No. 25 ranked Bacone College. The Lions finished the season at 6-4 to take second place in the Central States Football League.

Fans can still watch the entire game in HD video - for free - on the SAGU website.

While the current college football regular season has ended and the NFL prepares for the post-season, why not consider a fun alternative!

Re-live the passionate Purple Pride's scintillating comeback!

Rob Price, the host and play-by-play announcer during SAGU Sports Live events, will set the stage for the game with very accurate insights.

The Lions jumped to a 10-0 lead on a 30-yard field goal by James Gish and a five yard strike over the middle from QB Reid Golson to WR Dylan Moore. That combination would connect again late in the game to score the decisive points with less than a minute remaining.moore-dylan-winning-td

Bacone (bah-KOHN) answered with a 57-yard TD pass, before SAGU took a 17-7 lead with a gutsy fourth and goal score of their own.

Golson, who would rush for 53 yards in the game while directing the offense to 25 first downs against the Warriors, faced a fourth-and-two from the BC six yard line.

The call from the sideline was for a new play that featured every offensive lineman on the team to lining-up. Golson took a quick snap and followed the big road-pavers for a first down as well as the touchdown.

The Warriors, who had won the previous three meetings against the Pride, drew to within three with strong play from backup QB Karl Birkenfield. The Lions had knocked out the starter, Kyle Kuban, with a pair of early interceptions - the first by senior cornerback Trevor McKinley.

Birkenfield dashed in from a yard out, then tossed scoring passes of 16 yards to D'Andre Hood and a 24-yarder to Reinaldo Reyes. Bacone had the momentum with a 27-17 lead.

Head Coach Jesse Godding's team, who exhibited remarkable resolve by winning their final four games, would not fold.

Golson led the team on a 13-play, 77-yard jaunt to stay in the game. From the pocket he zipped a bullet to WR Jeremy McDonald. The junior snared the pass in the seam and darted past a defender to complete a 16-yard play that sliced the deficit to 27-24.

Birkenfield replied quickly, however, to reestablish a 10-point lead.

The Tribe took advantage of excellent field position to march 35 yards. Birkenfield rolled out and then dashed over the goal from a yard out, though he was flipped head-over-heals by McKinley.

It was 34-24 in the fourth quarter.

SAGU had their backs to the wall. But they also had the wind at their back and a refuse-to-lose attitude in their chest.

Golson ignited a 10-play, 64-yard trek to pay dirt. Junior halfback Troy Griffin (54 yards) barrelled across the goal line by scurrying eight-yards. Only four minutes remained.

Godding eschewed an onside kick and trusted the defense to make a stop. They did.

A three-and-out was huge, and a short punt set up shop at the BC 48 yard line. Three plays produced nothing, bringing up perhaps the biggest play of the season. Fourth and 10 yards to go.

From the pistol formation, Golson searched for a receiver, then rolled to his left. He tucked the ball and headed upfield.

The 197-pounder was met head-on near the 38-yard line. The broadcast announcers differed on whether he got enough yardage to retain possession. Golson had his doubts.

But he did, by the nose of the football.

brooks-fumble-recovery-vs-bcMcDonald made his seventh catch of the night with a 12-yarder over the middle. It set-up a play that was surprising. It was also executed perfectly.

Rather than advancing the ball with runs and short passes, Offensive Coordinator Frank Tristan signalled for an aggressive move.

Golson took the snap from center R.J. Adame  (ah-DAH-me), droppd back, and delivered a rainbow down the right sideline to Moore.

The 6'2, 220-pound wideout out-leapt a defensive back for the ball, latched on, and landed just inside the orange pylon. The game-winner lifted the Lions on top, 38-34.

Less than a minute was on the Lumpkins Stadium clock.  The visiting Warriors faced long odds and a long distance.

Converting three excellent passes, they moved downfield, nearly scoring.

Defensive Coordinator John Allen's unit dug in. At the Lions five yard line, senior DE Ike Caston flushed Birkenfield out of the backfield.  Scrambling to his right, the clock ticked inside ten seconds.

Unable to find an open teammate, he tried to run for it near the right sideline. The lanky QB, already scoring nine TD's during the season, somehow lost the ball on a fumble around the five, where a mad scramble ensued.

Freshman Ethridge Brooks, a softspoken defensive end, pounced on the pigskin to save the day.

Golson and the offense came out, lined up in the Victory Formation, where he took a knee to end the game.

It set off cheers, dances and celebrations on the field and in the stands. It also cost Coach Godding dry clothing.

A cold dousing never felt so good to him.
