Coburn chosen All-Conference; Wyatt wins Gold Glove

WAXAHACHIE  --  The Sooner Athletic Conference (SAC) announced the 2014 Softball Awards and two players from Southwestern Assemblies of God University are among those being honored.

Sophomore third baseman Kelsey Coburn received an All-Conference Second Team selection from the conference coaches. It was the highest award a Lady Lion has received in the three years of the program.

Senior catcher Heather Wyatt, from Lake Jackson, Texas, was named the school’s first-ever recipient of a Golden Glove award. The honor goes to the top defensive player at each position.

Kelsey Coburn, All-Conference

Coburn, from Lewisville, Texas, holds a number of SAGU offensive records. Batting in the coveted number three position, she has been a steady performer for two seasons.

The former player at Lewisville High School batted .343 this spring, which led the team and ranked No. 23 in the conference. She was tops in purple with 27 runs batted in. Coburn totaled 16 extra-base hits, including two home runs.

In the field she anchored the infield. She fielded 170 balls and made just eight errors, a .953 percentage. She threw out baserunners 99 times, more than doubling her closest pursuer.

Last year she hit .427, had 32 RBI, 15 XBH and three round-trippers. Coburn’s fielding percentage in 2013 was .917.

Heather Wyatt, Golden Glove

Wyatt had an excellent exit. A year after she hit .250, nine RBI’s and four XBH, the former Brazoswood H.S. Buccaneer batted .263, drove in 24 runs and whacked a record 17 extra-base hits.

But her winning the Golden Glove was for her defensive numbers. She had 239 chances and was credited with 209 putouts, most of them catching the third strike and making tags at the plate. Wyatt committed just five errors for a .979 fielding accuracy. She also threw out 21 runners.

The durable Wyatt played in all 52 games.

Coaches chose 18 players on the All-Conference First Team, led by St. Gregory’s University and Oklahoma Baptist University. Both had five players selected. Oklahoma City University placed three on the unit.

Mid-America Christian University and the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma had five players named to the Second Team.

(The entire listing is posted below)

Wyatt received two awards at last week’s SAGU Athletic Awards Ceremony, the Lions’ Pride trophy and was the Champions of Character recipient.

Coburn didn’t receive any hardware as the Best Offensive Player went to Britney Johnson (Tahlequah, Ok / Tahlequah HS) while the Best Defensive Player was awarded to pitcher Hannah Lee (Hardinsburg, Ky / Breckinridge HS).

While Johnson’s batting average (.345) was two points higher than Coburn’s, she did not have enough at bats to qualify for NAIA or SAC honors.

Johnson set a team record for scoring runs (29) and was the most difficult player on the team to strikeout, whiffing once every 10 trips to the plate.

Lee led the league in innings pitched (182.2). Due to injuries to Johnson and Blayr Huff (Keller, TX / Liberty Christian HS) she was forced into 35 starts. On 28 occasions she hurled a complete game.

Lee had good control, striking out 91 and walking 26 during those 35 games. Her earned run average was a team best 6.25.

The team’s scoring dearth (3.0 runs per game, shutout 18 times, held to two runs or less in 33 or 52 games) led to Lee absorbing 24 losses. Her seven wins was the new school record, including a 2-0 shutout of then No. 20 ranked Texas Wesleyan.

Freshman Amber Gignac (Houston, Tx / Homeschool) was named the Most Improved Player on the team.

Her batting average (.313) was steady throughout the season before taking a sharp incline down the stretch. She was second on the Pride with 26 runs scored.

The lefty finished the season by going 15–of-32, .469 over the last 11 games.
