SAGU scoring drought continues

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  An aggressive offense overcame a resisting defense was the storyline on a sweltering fall afternoon at Pride Park. The resulting 3-0 Bacone College triumph over Southwestern Assemblies of God University continued the Lady Warriors mastery over SAGU.

In their brief six year history, the Lady Lions have dropped all five of their meetings against Bacone, and have yet to score in the series. The win improved the BC record to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Red River Athletic Conference. SAGU dropped their sixth straight, falling to 2-8 and 0-3.

The Warriors, pressing from the midway point in the first half, were awarded a pair of penalty kicks due to fouls committed within the box. They scored on the first at the 34:23 mark by Brittany Woodward. Her second PK was rejected when SAGU goalie Haley Shingleton (Pasadena, Tx / Deer Park HS) stoned her laser with a head high, two-handed save.

Woodward's second tally, in the 63rd minute, was huge. Demi Burai sent a pass from the right to Woodward in the middle of the box. She gathered the ball and ripped a shot from eight yards out. Shingleton had no chance on the play.

The Tribe's final score came when Tamara Thompson lifted a pass over a beaten Lions defender to Burai. Open on the right side, she drove inside and sent a kick that deflected high off of Shingleton's hands and bounced into the webbing in the 83rd minute.

The Lady Lions, as has been their primary need all season, struggled to muster a scoring threat. Donning their purple uniforms, they began the contest by keeping the ball on the Warriors' end through the first twenty minutes.

Golden opportunities went awry

Noelle Pugliese  (Lee's Summitt, Mo / Lee's Summit North HS) was dominating. Just five minutes into the match she booted what appeared to be a certain goal. Ashley Nerat (Menomonee Falls, Wisc / Menomonee Falls HS) connected with her on a needle-threading pass inside the box. She maneuvered past the keeper only to have her kick glance off the right post.

Ten minutes later she had a chance at the penalty mark following a pass from Natalie Pena (Dallas, Tx / Union HS, Tulsa, Ok). A defender blocked her shot. Again, in the 21st minute, Pugliese (pug-LEES) was denied from 10 yards away.

Once those moments passed, the Lady Lions had only two others, both by Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian). Trailing 1-0 late in the first half, her attempt from 15 yards out was broken up.

Late in the game, after a brilliant 40-yard zig-zag weave through the BC defense by Pena (PAIN-ya), she zipped the ball to a streaking Lambdin on the right flank. She broke free for what would've been an uncontested shot. The assistant referee on the sideline waved his flag, indicating she was offside.

Bacone (BAY-kone) outshot the Lady Lions by a 13-6 count and had six of the game's seven cornerkicks. Shingleton had six saves for Southwestern.

During their six-game skid, SAGU has been outscored 24-1. They have been blanked seven times this season.

On deck for Southwestern

The Lady Lions return to the pitch on Saturday, also at home, when they entertain Texas College (2-6, 2-1 in RRAC) at 1:00pm.. The Lady Steers edged Huston-Tillotson University, 1-0, in Austin, Texas on Thursday.
