Lady Lions fire 13 shots, Shingleton makes 17 saves

SAGU hosts Wayland Baptist at noon on Saturday

belisle-amber-at-wbuBETHANY, Oklahoma  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University played a solid defensive game on Tuesday afternoon in the suburbs of Oklahoma City.

The team’s lack of offensive punch hindered them in a 1-0 setback at the hands of Southwestern Christian University.

Sophomore Jill Owens scored an early goal in the 14th minute and the Lady Eagles made it stand up. Owens booted a direct kick from the left side of the box, wrapping it around the near post.

SAGU's junior goalie Haley Shingleton (Deer Park, Tx / Deer Park HS), who had 17 saves, got her fingertips on the ball. She collided with the post as the ball bounced into the webbing.

The Lady Lions, now 2-8 overall and 0-2 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, had their chances. The squad fired 13 shots, including seven on goal.

For SCU, the win avenged a 4-0 loss to SAGU last fall.

“We played very well,” said Head Coach Mandy Fortner. “We had a lot of opportunities.”

The coach was high on the play of junior forward Amber Belisle (Roseville, Cal / Whitney HS).

“Amber had a great game. She was involved in a lot of scoring chances,” the third year coach said. “She took a few shots from outside the box. One barely glanced off the keeper’s hands.”

Belisle (bah-LIE-yuhl) also had a corner kick late in the game. She placed it where Kaylie Cox (Midlothian, Tx / Midlothian HS) could deflect it with her forehead. Her header sailed just wide of the back post.

Amy Lambdin (Stockton, Cal / Elliot Christian) led the team with three shots on goal.

Madeleine Thornley (Flower Mound, Tx / Marcus HS), who registered two shots, created a scoring bid that begged for a finisher.

According to Coach Fortner, “Madi made a great run up the right side. She beat their outside back and then cut in, dribbling toward the near post.”

“She cut back, and got behind two runners, where her soft pass sat for a couple of seconds.”

No one was able to get to it before the ball was cleared by the Eagles.

“We took more shots and created some great chances,” Fortner explained, “but we lacked finishing. It was great game for our girls in other respects.”

The Lady Lions have dropped five in a row and have been blanked the same number.

Their defense continues to keep them with competitive. Only three times have they allowed more than two goals.

SCU upped their record to 8-2-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC.

The Lady Eagles have risen quickly. They were 8-9-2 last year and 2-14-1 two years ago. Their first season, 2010, saw the Blue Birds go 5-11-2.

SAGU returns home this Saturday, October 12, when they host Wayland Baptist University (7-4 / 2-1 SAC). The match begins at high noon.
