SAC Coaches tab Lady Lions to finish ninth
Oklahoma City is solid pick to wear crown
SAGU plays at Southwestern Christian on Saturday
WAXAHACHIE, Texas -- There was no surprise when the results of the Coaches’ Preseason Poll listed Oklahoma City University as the women’s basketball team to beat in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The Stars have won or shared the regular season title each season dating back to 2009. The team had a 28-4 overall record last season that included a 16-0 ledger against teams in the league.
Over the past four winters the Stars have been as regular as an almanac, racking up a 122-13 in all games as well as 78-4 in the SAC. They won the NAIA national championship two years ago when they were 35-1.
OCU received the maximum score of 100, gathering 10 of 11 first-place votes. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own school.
(The results of the entire poll are posted below)
Southwestern Assemblies of God University appears at No. 9 in the eleven team conference. Based on their record the past two seasons, 10-21 and 9-21, the pick is no surprise either.
However, SAGU won 24, 25 and 23 games in 2009, 2010 and 2011.
The team qualified for the NAIA National Tournament in 2010 and finished third in the nation in the NCCAA the following season.
In recent seasons the team struggled to replace three starters who had to sit out the season with injuries. The trio has returned this year and the team expects to return to their winning ways.
Veteran Head Coach Arlon Beadles commented on the strengths and challenges of playing in a new league after moving from the Red River Athletic Conference.
“The Sooner is an outstanding conference, he said. "I’m sure that OCU and (No. 2 pick) Oklahoma Baptist will be ranked high in the NAIA polls also.”
“It’s going to be a great challenge,” he continued. “I look forward to seeing how we can do against such great talent.”
The Lady Lions (weather permitting) begin conference play on Saturday afternoon with a game at Southwestern Christian University.
The 3:00pm tipoff in Bethany, Oklahoma, pits SAGU against the No. 11 pick, the Lady Eagles. SCU had a 14-19 record a year ago.
SAGU leads the series against SWCU by a 7-3 count, though the Eagles have won the last three meetings.
