WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  Behind a stellar defensive effort that limited Texas Wesleyan University to 25% shooting, Southwestern Assemblies of God University rolled to a 63-47 triumph on Saturday evening.

SAGU forced the Lady Rams to miss their first 15 shots and squeezed them into eight turnovers before scoring their first basket with 7:33 remaining in the first half.

The Lady Lions, now 12-12 overall and 6-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference, led at intermission, 27-18. SAGU could’ve turned the game into a rout but missed numerous layups.

Team Purple made 10-of-31 shots (32%) by halftime while the visitors were only 5-of-27 (18%).

Wesleyan (11-12 / 6-8 in SAC) battled to make a game of it but never seriously threatened.

The closest they came was 31-25 with 16:23 left in the game. SAGU countered with seven unanswered points and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way.

The Lady Lions, who snapped a six-game losing streak to their rivals from Ft. Worth, had their largest lead at 61-44. Wesleyan won the first meeting, 80-59, on January 9.page-charity-posey

A hot-starting Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Lakeview Centennial HS, Panola College , Panola College) had 10 of her 18 points in the first half and gave the early momentum to SAGU.

She drained a pair of three-pointers, thanks to assists from Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS ), then turned a Rams turnover into a breakaway layup and a 10-0 lead.

The 5-foot-6 scoring flash maintains her lead as the Sooner Athletic Conference’s leading scorer at 18.2. She has reached double-figures in 20 of 24 games.

Winston connected on her 50th triple of the season, just 13 shy of her career best. She was also credited with three steals and five rebounds.

Charity Page (Nacogdoches, Tx / Nacogdoches HS ) continued her display of ascension. The 6-foot freshman had 12 points, five rebounds, two steals and blocked a shot.

Shaquita Roberts (San Antonio, Tx / Byron Steele HS ) and Alexis McAfee (DeSoto, Tx / DeSoto HS ) accounted for eight points each.

Shaq grabbed 13 rebounds, seven of them on the offensive glass. She blocked three shots and her four steals was a game-high.

Wesleyan’s starting line-up was limited to just 22 points. The quintet made 7-of-32 (.219) shots and registered 18 turnovers. To be fair, the Lady Rams were missing two of their top scorers to injury.

winston-dribbling-soloOny (OH-nee) Nolisa and Kayla McCray came off the bench to score 13 and 12 points respectively. They also had eight and nine rebounds separately.

Video highlights of the game will appear on the SAGU Sports Network fan page on Facebook. The rebroadcast of the game will be posted this week at SAGU TV.

SAGU has six games remaining in the regular season, four of them at home.

This Thursday they will meet No. 4 Oklahoma Baptist University at 6:00pm (CST).

The Lady Bison (20-3 / 12-1 in SAC) suffered the end of their 13 game win streak on Saturday when Wayland Baptist University (13-9 / 10-3 in SAC) defeated them, 73-65, in Shawnee, Ok.

The game will be carried live in HD on the SAGU Sports Network beginning with the pre-game show at 5:45pm.
