Strength in Numbers

WILD ONES: Amanda Laney returns to the frontline attck, where she hit .265 and racked up 105 kills as a freshman, which was fifth best in 2009.WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The winning ways of the Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s volleyball team have continued for well over ten years. Much of the credit belongs to a long line of talented, unified players and Head Coach Hank Moore.

With winning records in eight of the ten seasons Moore has been at the helm, SAGU is no flash in the pan. Heading into his second decade, perhaps their dominance will liken them to a mighty river.

They will begin preparations in August when at least 18 players report to fall camp. Moore plans to field a varsity club of 12 or 13 players, with a JV roster of eight or nine players.
Recently the veteran coach announced that five new players will vie for a spot on the roster.

They include sophomore *Carleigh Dollar (Weatherford, Tx / Brock HS, Texas Wesleyan University), *Taylor Fisher (Tyler Community College), freshman Jessi Giese (Tulsa, Ok / Union HS), freshman Hannah Lewis (Broken Arrow, Ok / Broken Arrow HS), and freshman Jessica Sodich (Ovilla, Tx / Ovilla Christian HS),

Dollar, at 5’9, will play at setter and rightside hitter. She is the sister of current Lady Lion, Beka Dollar. Fisher is also a 5’9 sophomore, and will hit from the rightside of the court. Giese, a Middle Blocker, is the tallest of the quintet at 5’11, and plays at Middle Blocker.  Lewis, standing 5’9, is an outside or rightside hitter, while Sodich is a 5’9 outside hitter and defensive specialist.

Moore also pointed out that a starter from the 2009 squad, Amanda Laney (New Braunfels, Tx / New Braunfels Christian), has returned, and will battle the five aforementioned newcomers, ten returnees from the 2010 varsity and a pair of players who red-shirted last fall.

READY FOR ACTIVE DUTY: After redshirting last season, Ferris Kruse (left) and Alissa Kirk await their chance to win a roster spot. The twelve include; sophomore Brittany Briggs (Maypearl, Tx / Maypearl HS), senior Tina Brown (Sequin, Tx / Lifegate Christian), sophomore Taylor Calverley (Mansfield, Tx / Grace Prep), senior Krystal Cisneros (El Paso, Tx / Del Valle HS), sophomore Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS), sophomore Rebekah Dollar (Weatherford, Tx / Brock HS), senior Laura Espinosa (Duncanville, Tx / Duncanville HS), sophomore Devan Guynes (Red Oak, Tx / Red Oak HS), junior Caitlyn Hudson (Mansfield, Tx / Legacy HS), and sophomore Stephanie Pena (San Antonio, Tx / Clark HS).

The 2010 redshirted players who will contend for court time are Alissa Kirk (Pataskala, Oh / Gahanna HS) and Ferris Kruse (San Antonio, Tx / Cornerstone Christian).
