Jarvis tops SAGU, 66-46

Krock, Cox lead reserves in solid outing

Official Box Score

HAWKINS, Texas  --  Southwestern Assemblies of God University built a six-point first half lead and had a solid performance by reserves, but weren’t able to hold off Jarvis Christian College in a 66-46 setback on Saturday afternoon.

The loss was the ninth in a row for the Lady Lions. Their overall record is 5-13 and their mark in the Red River Athletic Conference slipped to 2-9.

At the mid-season point in the RRAC the Lady Lions are one win out of eighth place, which would qualify the team for the conference tournament. Eleven RRAC games remain, seven of them at home.

The team returns to the court on Monday night in Tyler. SAGU will take on Texas College (3-14, 2-9 in RRAC) at 5:30pm.

The Lady Lions defeated the Lady Steers, 79-76, on December 3.

Producing one of their best shooting efforts of the season, Team Lioness opened the game with three straight triples and a 9-3 lead.

Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS) made two of them, both on passes from Okievia Bratchett (Center, Tx / Tenaha HS). Jessica Sodich (Arlington, Tx / Ovilla Christian) drained a trey, thanks to an assist from Andrea Lugo (San Antonio, Tx / Somerset HS).

They battled to a 15-15 deadlock and were within 25-23 with 5:23 left in the half on a basket by Sierra Hankins (Welch, Ok / Welch HS).

Over the next 10:21 (until 15:02 was left in the second half), Jarvis went on a 21-3 run to take over the game with a 46-26 lead. The Lady Lions made just 1-of-8 shots and committed 11 turnovers in that quarter segment of the game.

The closest they came the rest of the way was a 9-1 run that drew the 'Cats to within 51-39 with 10:51 left on the clock. Jarvis countered by bagging 12 of the next 15 points to break the game open with a 63-42 margin.

While the Lady Lions made 46% of their shots, the same as Jarvis, the team lost the ball on 29 occasions due to turnovers. It led directly to extra possessions for the Lady Bulldogs, who parlayed them into 58 shots. SAGU had just 41.

Southwestern’s starting line-up was outscored by their reserves, 26-20, with substitutes connecting on 12-of-18 shots. The starters were 7-of-23, 2-of-8 on the foul line with 18 turnovers.

A pair of freshman guards paced Team Purple.

Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS) led with 13 points, while Bethany Krock (San Antonio, Tx / Cornerstone Christian) came off the bench to hit six of eight shots. She finished with 12 points in 11 minutes, doubling her best game to date.

Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS) added nine points on 4-for-4 shooting while grabbing a team-best seven rebounds.

Sophomore forward Brittany Griffin (Rockwall, Tx / Rockwall Christian) tossed in five points.

Dinilesizwe “Dee” Love, who has had her top two performances against SAGU, poured in 20 points. She swished half of her 14 attempts, including 5-of-9 from beyond the arc.

She also made her mark on defense with nine steals.

Love, a senior guard from Jackson, Tennessee, fired 11 three-point baskets during a 42-point outburst on December 1.

Slowing her down is probably easier than pronouncing her first name; Dinilesizwe (dah-NELL-ah-swah).

Ivory Russell, a 6’2 center, contributed 15 points in her 10th double-digit showing. She also ripped down nine boards.

Upcoming Games

After playing in Tyler on Monday, the Lady Lions meet Wiley College in Marshall on Thursday night.

The game is scheduled to start at 7:30pm in the Alumni Gym. The Lions will tipoff their game at 5:30pm.

The Lady Wildcats, ranked no. 18 in the NAIA’s Top 25 Coaches Poll, lead the RRAC with a 17-1 ledger. Wiley is a perfect 11-0 in conference action.

SAGU returns home next Saturday afternoon when they tangle with Bacone College (4-10, 3-7 in RRAC) at 3:00pm.

Last winter the Lady Warriors split the series, rallying past SAGU, 46-44, in Muskogee, Oklahoma. The Lady Lions rebounded to lay claim to a 64-57 victory at home.

Saturday's game will be broadcast on the internet in HD by SAGU Sports Live.
