SAGU signs 6-foot center, Charity Page

Nocagdoches player one state's top prep stars

WAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  After turning over their entire line-up two years ago and enduring an injury-riddled campaign last winter, the Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s basketball team is eager to turn the page to winning again.

Veteran Head Coach Arlon Beadles took a solid step in that direction when SAGU signed Charity Page to a National Letter of Intent. The 6-foot center from Nacogdoches, Texas is certain to bolster the Lady Lions interior game.

“Charity is a big post-player,” said Coach Beadles. “She’s a great rebounder and scorer. She is also wonderful Christian young lady that we're elated to have coming to SAGU as a student-athlete.”

Page is very athletic and provides a strong presence on the boards and at the low block. She performs well with her back to the basket as well as in transition.

While at Nacogdoches (NAK-uh-DOH-chuhz) High School she played on the Lady Dragons varsity team during four seasons.

Her stellar play as a senior, despite her team going 18-14 in the very tough District 16 in Class 4A, led to her being named the Most Valuable Player in the district.

She made quite an impression to have earned such an honor on a fourth place team. Teams they battled against included Lindale HS (26-6), John Tyler (18-11) and Jacksonville (11-8), as well as Whitehouse and Corsicana. The Dragons averaged 52 ppg and allowed just 45.

Nacogdoches is 158 miles from Waxahachie, and just 20 miles north of Lufkin in southeast Texas.

After a freshman year in which she netted five points (high of 18) and seven boards per game, her career was as steady and reliable as tested steel.

Her sophomore effort finished with 16 ppg (high: 30), nine rebounds and 1.2 blocks per contest for the second straight year.

The figures remained impactful as a junior; 16 ppg (high: 29), 8+ boards. She then capped her prep career this season with another 16 ppg (high: 38) and wiped the glass clean to the tune of 10+ rebounds per outing.

In the Doc Edwards Invitation Tournament in Bossier City, Louisiana, Page led the Lady Dragons to the championship with a 59-33 win in the finals against C. E. Byrd HS (Shreveport, La).

Nacogdoches defeated Northwood (Lena, La) in the quarterfinals, 70-43, before Page scored 18 during their 61-45 triumph over Mansfield HS (Mansfield, La).

Other honors she garnered during her years in Black & Gold include
Freshman – Second Team All-District
Sophomore – First Team All-District, selected to the 2011 Texas State Girls All-Star Basketball Team.
Junior – First Team All-District, District 14, 4A Defensive Player of the Year.
Senior – First Team All-District, MVP of District.

During each year on campus she earned a regular spot on the Academic All-District team.

Her head coach at Nacogdoches HS was Ms. Deatrick Stigall. Page also played for an AAU team, the Texas Heat-Millwood Summer in 2012, where John Millwood served as the head coach.

Her father is the Reverend Mack Page; her mom is Shajuanda Page. Born and raised in Nacogdoches, the Criminal Justice Major has one sibling in 21-year old Timothy Page.

The Lady Lions will announce remaining members of this year's solid recruiting class in the coming days.

SAGU has produced 10-21 and 9-21 seasons the past two years after going 23-13, 23-8 and 24-8 in the previous three.

Those campaigns saw them produce a berth in the NAIA national tournament, a victory over an NCAA Division I opponent as well as a 3rd place national finish in the National Christian College Athletic Association tournament.

Page is expected to help with one of the team’s biggest needs, rebounding. The club ranked 62nd of 103 Division I teams, allowing more boards than they grabbed.

The Lady Lions also slipped to 94th in blocked shots (42 in 30 games), after finishing the 2012 season in fourth (158 in 31).

The expected return of senior Shaquita Roberts (San Antonio, Tx / Byron Steele HS) and a healthy Sierra Hankins (Welch, Ok / Welch HS) and Jirah Rodriguez (Georgetown, Tx / Georgetown HS) should be a big boost in both scoring and on the glass.

Roberts has 237 career blocks; she led the nation in 2012 with 114 (3.9 per game), while also averaging 10.3 boards per game (15th in NAIA) that season.

Added to that will be a backcourt that benefits from Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Panola JuCo, Lakeview Centennial HS) (16 ppg) coming back from injury.
