5'8 two-guard stars at DeSoto High School

First recruit could be cornerstone for Class of 2014

colbert-ebony-signsWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The Southwestern Assemblies of God University women’s basketball team has announced the signing of Ebony Colbert as a student-athlete for the Lady Lions.

A 5-foot-8 senior, Colbert is a current standout at Class 5A DeSoto High School. She is a 45% shooter who also leads the Eagles in rebounding.

“I feel she is a great sign for SAGU,” said Arlon Beadles, SAGU’s veteran Head Coach. “We have entered the Sooner Athletic Conference, maybe the best league in the NAIA.”

“Ebony will not only be a great fit on our campus, but her skills should be a real asset in the Sooner.”

Beadles describes Colbert as “a big, strong two-guard who can shoot the three (pointer).”

“Of course,” he continued, “she plays in one of the top 5A programs in Texas,” in reference to DeSoto. The city of 51,102 is just 18 miles north of Waxahachie.

Beadles also mentioned that Ebony is well suited for the atmosphere and spirit at SAGU. “She is a preacher’s kid and is very active in her dad’s church.”

Her father, the Reverend Charles Colbert, pastors the Pentecostal Church of God In Christ in DeSoto (I-35 at Belt Line Rd).

“Ebony is a great player, student and Christian,” he added. “I look forward to her being a part of the Lady Lions basketball program!”

Larry Goad, who has led the DeSoto Eagles to prominence in his eight years at the helm, has high-praise for Colbert. He has a winning percentage of .857 during his tenure with the Green & Gold.colbert-ebony-and-coaches

“Ebony is a hard-working, dedicated player. She has improved her game in her offense and leadership.”

“She is an elected captain of the team and has proven herself to be our defensive stopper,” he continued. “She is very unselfish, is shooting 45% from the field and is second on the team in rebounding.”

Next fall Colbert will join current Lady Lion, Alexis McAfee, a freshman guard who graduated from DeSoto.

One of SAGU's all-time best players was Stephanie Hawkins, also from DeSoto, who starred for the team during 2008-11.

Hawkins, also a guard, averaged scoring in double figures all four seasons. Her high was 29 against King College (Tenn) during the NCCAA tournament. She made 111 triples, including nine in a game against Wiley College.riples,2008-11 , ,

Colbert has also played club ball for the Texas Elite team.

SAGU has come through two seasons of rebuilding and injuries after the three best years in program history from 2008-2011.

During those three seasons they won 23, 24 and 25 games, qualifying for the NAIA national tournament once and finished third in the country at the National Christian College Athletic Association’s national tourney.

The Lady Lions home games are broadcast in HD by SAGU Sports Live starting each January. No other school in the NAIA matches the quality coverage.

Saturday, January 4, when Mid-America Christian University (Ok) visits, is the first contest to be aired this season. There is no charge for this service.

The Purple Pride is currently 4-4. Coach Beadles’ trademark defense shows that SAGU is No. 10 nationally in scoring defense, allowing 56 points per game.

Opponents are making just .323, a figure that leads the Sooner Athletic Conference and ranks No. 7 in the NAIA.

Steals and Blocks are also categories the team rates among the nation's best.

SAGU Basketball

SAGU has four more games on tap prior to the Christmas break.

On Thursday, December 5, they host Oklahoma City University (1-0), followed by a pair of road games; Dec. 7 at Southwestern Christian University (Ok) and Dec. 10 at Dallas’ Paul Quinn College.

They close the semester with a home tilt against Arlington Baptist College on Dec. 16.

The 1,200 seat Sheaffer Center, built in 1997, is the home for SAGU basketball. The team practices at one of three gyms on campus.

Last March the SAGU men's team went 33-5 and finished No. 2 in the NAIA after appearing in the national championship game. Their last two games were broadcast on ESPN and CBS.
