Winston enjoys career night with 28 points

SAGU plays pre-Christmas home game on Monday, Dec. 16

roberts-shaq-blk-at-pqcDALLAS, Texas  --  Behind a defensive effort that forced 26 turnovers, Southwestern Assemblies of God University trounced Paul Quinn College, 71-49, in the Tigers’ Den in southeast Dallas.

SAGU, now 5-4, applied the clamps to a young Lady Tigers backcourt and came away with 20 steals. It fueled a number of breakaway baskets.

Senior Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Lakeview Centennial HS) incited the team with 19 of her game high 28 points in the first half.

It was a career night and her fourth straight performance of 20 or more points. In fact, she has poured in 20+ in six of the team’s nine games.

Winston knocked down 9-of-17 shots, including 4-of-8 from three-point range. She also led the team with four steals.

Junior forward Jirah Rodriguez (Georgetown, Tx / Georgetown HS) added 10 points and a pair of triples.

Senior Shaquita Roberts (San Antonio, Tx / Byron Steele HS) was tops on the boards with 10 rebounds. She also blocked two shots.

Head Coach Arlon Beadles continues to toy with the line-up in search of consistent play. He found many positives on Tuesday.

SAGU’s frontline asserted themselves in the paint, grabbing 53 rebounds, 21 of them on the offensive glass. Cashing in on the extra shots remains an area with room to grow.

So does free throw shooting. The Purple Pride made only 15-of-32 tries, though it was their first effort below .500.

Six players scored four points apiece. The bench contributed 25 points and committed just five turnovers.

Combined with the fruit of squeezing mistakes from the Tigers, SAGU did a great job of protecting the ball, especially in the second half. They coughed up the ball only four times in the final twenty minutes to finish with 16.

The team broke away from a 22-21 lead against Paul Quinn with a 13-4 run. Winston scored seven in the surge, three coming on baskets after Tiger turnovers.

SAGU lead at intermission, 35-26. The Lady Lions moved the ball very well throughout the game but struggled to convert open looks.winston-nia-during-28-pt-night

In the second half they squelched any hope of a comeback when Rodriguez cashed in a Quinn error and then Winston quickly drained a trifecta during SAGU's first two possessions.

The Lady Tigers never got closer than nine points the rest of the game.

Bethany Krock (San Antonio, Tx / Cornerstone Christian) sparked a scoring spree that witnessed SAGU put the game out of reach with eight consecutive points.

First she netted an outside jumper, then a layup to boost the lead from 54-42 with 8:17 remaining to 62-42 at 4:17.

Inside buckets by Sierra Hankins (Welch, Ok / Welch HS) and two deuces by Charity Page (Nacogdoches, Tx / Nacogdoches HS) kept the Tigers at bay.

Hankins grabbed six boards in ten minutes of playing time while Laken Ward (Hattieville, Ark / Wonderview HS) reeled in seven in eighteen minutes.

The margin swelled to a 24-point lead on an offensive putback by Kassy Cox (Lufkin, Tx / Lufkin HS).

A pair of 5'6 point guards, Taylor Hill (Waxahachie, Tx / Waxahachie HS) and Monica Dorsey (Garland, Tx / Sachse HS ), registered five and four assistes respectively.

Thirteen of fifteen players scored for the Lady Lions, who shot 38% from the floor (25 of 66). Paul Quinn was limited to 31% (15 of 48).

The Lions were 5-4 at this point in the season a year ago, 3-6 two seasons ago and 6-3 three years ago.

SAGU has one game remaining prior to Christmas

Next Monday, December 16, they host Arlington Baptist College in the Sheaffer Center. The tipoff is slated for 6:00pm.
