roberts-block-stgWAXAHACHIE, Texas  --  The author of the book, “$3.33,” Jarod Kintz, wrote that “Good byes often come in waves.” He must have witnessed the successful senior swan song by a pair of seniors from Southwestern Assemblies of God University.

Making big play after big play, Nia Winston (Garland, Tx / Lakeview Centennial HS , Panola College) and Shaquita Roberts (San Antonio, Tx / Byron Steele HS ) powered SAGU to a 70-46 rout of St. Gregory’s University on Thursday night.

Winston, the leading scorer in the Sooner Athletic Conference, poured in eight-of-twelve shots for 22-points to key an offense that made 48% of its attempts.

Roberts, a six-foot Patriot missile, intercepted six steals and seemingly blocked every shot by the Cavaliers. Though only credited with two blocks, she appeared to have at have at least twice that many.

Her first rejection was a milestone, giving her 300 in her illustrious career. After leading the NAIA as a junior (114) and finishing second as a sophomore (98), she ranks sixth nationally this season with 64.

Some exit strategy. The good bye of Winston and Roberts was a joy to watch, with wave after wave of reminders.

Of Roberts play, Head Coach Arlon Beadles said, "No doubt she is our all-time leader in block shots. It has been an honor to coach her."

"She has come a long ways," he added. "Shaq is a wonderful person!"

The Lady Lions, now 14-15 overall and 8-11 against the Sooner Athletic Conference, jumped to a 16-2 lead and never trailed.

By halftime the team had a 35-20 advantage and both seniors had set the pace. Winston had 13 points and Roberts had 10 rebounds.

The latter went on to add an eleventh carom in the second half. She also scored seven points in a game in which she only played 21 minutes.

SAGU’s largest lead came during a five-minute stretch in the second half. In assembling a 15-0 run the Purple Pride led 57-26 with 10:44 remaining.

Winston accounted for four points and three assists during the scoring surge. Six-foot freshman Charity Page (Nacogdoches, Tx / Nacogdoches HS ), Roberts' heir apparent, tossed in six points and registered her 19th blocked shot of the season.

SAGU made 48% of their shots and 17-of-20 free throws. About the only thing that could stop them was their own undoing.

Careless play with the ball led to 24 turnovers, six more than their average. Most of them were unforced.

The visiting Cavaliers (2-23 / 1-18 in SAC) obliged with 24 of their own. It was their thirteenth loss in a row.

The Lady Lions, who have enjoyed four two-game winning streaks, have relied on their defense to carry them throughout the season. They did again on Thursday.

SAGU limited their guests to making just 26% of their 54 shots. Third in the SAC in three-pointers per game, the Cavs connected on only 4-of-25 (16%) beyond the arc. No one scored more than eight for St. Greg’s.

Second in the league in field goal defense; SAGU holds the opposition to .349 shooting. Only Texas Wesleyan University’s .348 is better, but just barely.

Winston was supported in scoring by Page, who knocked down all four of her shots in an eight point effort. Equaling her was fellow freshman Alexis McAfee (DeSoto, Tx / DeSoto HS ). She was 3-of-5 for eight points.

Roberts and sophomore Bethany Krock (San Antonio, Tx / Cornerstone Christian ) each netted seven points.

Seniors Andrea Lugo (San Antonio, Tx / Somerset HS ) and Sierra Hankins (Welch, Ok / Welch HS ) also saw action, with Lugo making a pair of assists.

Regular Season Finale at John Brown on Saturday

The Lady Lions will wrap-up the regular season on Saturday. They travel to northwest Arkansas to play No. 16 John Brown University (22-6 / 14-5 in SAC) at 1:00pm.

The Golden Eagles are 13-2 at home, though one of the setbacks was against Southwestern Christian University (9-18 / 7-12). An upset on the road would give the Pride a .500 campaign at 15-15.

Fans can watch the game at no charge on livestream video. Access both video and LiveStats at: http://jbuathletics.com/wbasketball/

JBU’s 22 wins is the most in their program history. It includes a stunning 67-57 upset of No. 4 ranked Oklahoma Baptist University last week.

The regular season championship will come down to the finale when OBU (25-4 / 17-2 in SAC) visits No. 5 Oklahoma City University (20-3 / 17-2 in SAC) at 3:00pm on Saturday.

Conference Tournament Update

All eleven teams participate in next week’s (March 5-8) conference tournament. The pairings and game times will be announced on Sunday.

Full coverage will be provided by SAGU, beginning on Sunday night.

Seventh place SAGU is likely to face tenth place Northwood University (9-20 / 2-17 in SAC) on Wednesday in Shawnee, Ok. A win would advance the Lady Lions to a clash against either OBU or OCU on Thursday.

All tournament games will be available on pay-per-view as well as LiveStats.
