Alumni Relations 'mugs' students during first week

Alumni Relations "mugs" students during first weekWaxahachie, Texas – August 29, 2012 – Southwestern Assemblies of God University (SAGU) launched a new tradition Tuesday, August 28. The Alumni Relations office "mugged" hundreds of students in the Barnes Student Center.

Alumni Relations hosted "Mugged 2012," a special event to welcome students to campus. Students were each given a SAGU mug to personalize. The mug can be used throughout the year for discounted refills at the Lions Den. The event also provided an opportunity for students to connect with the Alumni Relations office.

SAGU mascot, Judah the Lion, was present. Students frequented a photo booth to take "mug shots" with Judah and friends. Alumni Relations also provided a number of props to make the booth an entertaining experience. Students were asked to tag themselves on SAGU's Facebook where the photos would be available.

The Alumni Association has provided welcome gifts to students in the past, but wanted to initiate more personal contact with students. According to Alumni Relations Director Devin Ferguson, "Mugged 2012 was a fun way for us to distribute that gift in a personal way, connect alumni volunteers and students, and hopefully help establish a new fall tradition. Having alumni volunteers for this event underscored our message that giving back to our Alma Mater can be done in many ways."

Ferguson further explained that it is important for students to see active and giving alumni so that they "have an example to follow when they find themselves on the other side of their degree.”

Alumni Relations also serves alumni through a number of initiatives. Most notably, the department is behind annual planning for SAGU Homecoming, regional receptions, and special alumni activities such as "Night at the Ballpark."
